A hot start, stellar adjustments, and gritty finish pushed Clemson past 2-seeded Arizona for the schools second-ever trip to the Elite Eight.

The Clemson Tigers are advancing to the Elite Eight for the first time in 44 years.

Clemson came out firing on all cylinders. The Tigers’ defense overwhelmed the 2-seeded Wildcats, who entered the game ranked 9th in offensive efficiency (KenPom). Switching on screen and preventing fast break points, nothing came easy for Arizona. Meanwhile Chase Hunter, Ian Schieffelin and some major bench contributions from Chauncey Wiggins and RJ Godfrey helped the Tigers build a 27-14 lead with 7:18 to go in the first half.

Arizona continuously attacked Clemson in the paint with 7-footer Oumar Ballo, but Hall and Schieffelin didn’t commit a single foul in the half — sometimes even sidestepping and allowing a bucket. Ballo led Arizona in scoring at halftime, but still only had six points thanks to 0-3 free throw shooting. Arizona ratcheted up the defense with a full court press towards the end of the half and took Clemson out of rhythm. This allowed the Wildcats to cut the lead to eight as the teams entered the half with the score at 39-31.

Schieffelin led all scorers with 9 first half points while Chase Hunter and Chauncey Wiggins each had 8 and PJ Hall had 7.

Arizona came out of halftime with even more defensive intensity and it was quickly clear that their defensive ability would make holding the lead even harder than it was against Baylor the weekend prior. In less than six minutes, Arizona completed the comeback and took a 46-45 lead, their first of the game. That’s typically when you’d expect an underdog who took an early lead to fold. Clemson however showed incredible resiliency and regrouped.

Over the next 10 minutes of game clock, the Arizona Wildcats made zero field goals. They scored 12 points all coming from perfect 12/12 free throw shooting. Clemson was severely outplaying the blue blooded favorites, and it felt like the referees — who let both teams play a very physical style in the first half — were determined to decide the game themselves.

Despite this, Clemson smartly slowed the tempo and actually regained the lead and then extended it to 7-points with just under 5 minutes left to play. Unfortunately, the bevy of foul calls put Arizona into the bonus and Clemson deep into foul trouble. Coach Brownell responded by switching to a zone defense. Remarkably, this lulled Arizona into settling for out-of-rhythm 3-pointers again and again.

As the 2-minute mark neared, Arizona was within three points. Clemson needed points to avoid a sense of impending doom, and were gifted a 1-and-1 opportunity that sent PJ Hall to the free throw line. He had missed the front-end of an 1-and-1 moments before and as the game cut to an extended TV timeout, the importance of the shots loomed. After a long wait and a big breath at the line, PJ Hall calmly sank both shots to re-extend the Tiger lead to five.

On the next possession, Ballo got inside position and scored easily. Schieffelin and Hall returned the favor with a gorgeous high-low play that netted a lay-up. Arizona once again forced Hall to decide between his fourth foul or another Ballo lay-up and Ballo got his basket. Clemson held a precarious two-point lead with 91 seconds remaining. They tried to work it in the post again, but neither Schieffelin nor Hall could get good positioning. With 7 seconds remaining on the shot clock — and good fortune to not get called for a 3-second violation on Hall — Coach Brownell made a bold decision to call timeout just before Hall attempted a contested shot. This is what he drew up:

The creative in-bounds play netted Clemson a wide open dunk and a two-possession lead. Years ago, Clemson struggled immensely with in-bounding the ball, but Coach Brownell truly tilted the matchup in his team’s favor with at least three “special teams” buckets like this one. He outcoached Arizona in this one and proved can no longer be viewed as the same coach he was a decade ago.

Arizona had been forcing 3-pointers all half and eventually one fell at the most critical time. Jaden Bradley, who came off the bench to lead Arizona with 18 points, made a key 3-pointer to once again give the Wildcats life. Clemson would have the ball with 49 seconds to go and a two-point lead. A bucket would give them complete control of the game. A defensive stop would give Arizona a chance to tie or win in the final seconds. After an 0-10 performance in the ACC tournament loss to Boston College, Chase Hunter has been Clemson’s best player through the NCAA tournament. It was fitting that he would take the game’s most important shot.

After burning most of the shot clock, Chase Hunter took a pass from Joe Girard and attacked. He got into the paint, leapt, ducked under the extended arms of Jaden Bradley — absorbing contact along the way — and laid it in as the whistle blew. He’d make the free throw to complete the three-point play and ice the game. Arizona would score again, but it was too late. Clemson broke their fullcourt press and turned it into a Dillon Hunter lay-up in the final moments to end it.

Chase Hunter led Clemson with 18 points along with 7 rebounds and 5 assists. PJ Hall, after two rough games to start the tournament, chipped in 17 points and 8 rebounds. Schieffelin added 14 points, 7 rebounds, and 3 assists. The passing between the two bigs was key. Joe Girard was blanketed all night and only took 5 shots for 4 points, but had 6 assists.

Clemson notched the best win in program history, beating a 2-seed for the first time. In context of program history, the seismic proportion of the win can’t be understated. Clemson’s NCAA tournament wins are shown below:

With his team’s incredible win, Coach Brownell proved doubters wrong and hopefully healed what had become an untenable rift in the fan base over his future. At this point, a raise and extension are all but guaranteed and everyone should be on board.

4-seed Alabama is up next, and while they’re a great team, Clemson has already beat them. This is the best season in Clemson basketball history and it isn’t done yet.

After an electric weekend against FSU, Clemson travels to Miami looking for a third ACC series win.

There’s no way to describe last weekend’s contest against Florida State other than magical. The Tigers completed two of the most electric comebacks I’ve ever witnessed on the baseball field, rallying from 8-1 and 11-2 deficits to sweep the ‘Noles. I think we’re all still trying to fathom the feat.

It’s a new weekend, however, and the Tigers turn to their other Florida-based ACC rival, the Miami Hurricanes.

The 2nd-ranked (or 3rd, pick your favorite poll) Tigers (22-2, 5-1 ACC) will travel to Coral Gables to face the Hurricanes (14-10, 5-4 ACC) in a three-game series beginning Thursday night. This will be Clemson’s second ACC road series in three weeks after taking a series in Durham against the Duke Blue Devils two weeks ago.

No one in college baseball is hotter right now than the Tigers’ Blake Wright, who was just named ACC and National Player of the Week after his massive week against the ‘Noles, Winthrop and Presbyterian, going 13-for-22 with six home runs and 21 RBIs, including the two grand slams from this past weekend. Wright is currently tied for sixth in the country with 13 home runs and second in the country with 40 RBIs.

Clemson has risen to No. 2 in the Baseball America polls, their highest ranking since 2007, and No. 3 in the D1Baseball.com rankings and USA Today Coaches’ Poll. The Tigers are currently No. 1 in the NCAA’s RPI metric.

On the Miami side, the Hurricanes have been about as up-and-down as possible this season, with series losses to No. 6 Florida and Notre Dame, but huge series wins over No. 9 Virginia and No. 14 North Carolina. Led by infielders Jason Torres and Daniel Cuvet, the Hurricanes have an offense that has shown the ability to explode at any time. Tiger pitchers will have to have a much better weekend than their showing this past weekend.

The weekend kicks off Thursday night and will conclude on Saturday afternoon. Starting rotations are expected to be released soon. Thursday and Friday night’s games will start at 7 p.m. on the ACC Network while Saturday’s first pitch is set for 1 p.m. on the ACC Network Extra.

Brian Pedersen from SB Nation’s Arizona Wildcats site joins us to talk about the Sweet Sixteen matchup.

After surviving a late rally from the Baylor Bears, Clemson is officially through to the Sweet Sixteen for the first time since 2018. They now get the daunting task of facing the Arizona Wildcats on Thursday evening.

Brian Pedersen from Desert Swarm was kind enough to send us some thoughts on the matchup for a quick preview:

Will Harper: Clemson likes to keep the tempo quite slow in their games, a clear contrast to Arizona’s lightning-quick offense. How does Arizona establish the pace on Thursday against a stingy Tiger defense?

Brian Pedersen: Plenty of teams have tried to slow [the tempo] down against Arizona, using as much of the shot clock as possible, with mixed results. It’s more successful if a team makes the Wildcats take longer on offense, like with a zone, than holding the ball, because if the Wildcats get any chances to get in transition they will. They average 15.2 seconds per offensive possession, the 8th-quickest in the country, and if the shot is there early they will take it.

WH: The most exciting matchup in this game to me is PJ Hall/Ian Schieffelin vs Oumar Ballo/Keshad Johnson. What does Arizona need from their frontcourt to feel good about a win?

BP: Offensive rebounds, made layups, and drawing fouls. Oumar Ballo is a very tough defensive assignment, and he is good at getting opposing bigs into foul trouble. Johnson has made more 3-pointers this season than in his first 4 combined, so his ability to stretch the floor leaves more space inside for lobs and high-low passes.

WH: Caleb Love is the clear scoring leader for the Wildcats - the offense runs largely through his hand. How can Clemson hope to slow him down?

BP: Teams that are most successful against Love face-guard him at all times and never go under screens so as to take away open looks on the perimeter. But if you get too close he’ll drive, and he’s good at drawing fouls going to the rim. Ironically, Arizona actually has a better record when he scores between 9 and 22 points while it is 3-6 when he scores 23-plus.

WH: Clemson is already happy with a Sweet Sixteen berth, but the expectations for Arizona are a bit higher. The Wildcats have notoriously suffered several unexpected early departures from the tournament over the last few years - how has this year’s Arizona squad shown they are capable of playing for a national championship and are they handling the pressure well?

BP: First and foremost, there’s a ton of NCAA tourney experience on the roster. Caleb Love and Keshad Johnson have both played in the national title game, while Oumar Ballo was on the Gonzaga team that made the final in the bubble in 2021. Additionally, Pelle Larsson and Jaden Bradley are in the Sweet 16 for the second time.

This experience paid off early in the season when the Wildcats won at Duke and beat Michigan State in Palm Springs on Thanksgiving while blowing out Wisconsin at home. There were some stinkers in Pac-12 play, with three road losses to the bottom four teams in the standings, but when it’s been a big game they’ve always brought their best.

WH: What is the X-factor for the Wildcats in this matchup?

BP: Balanced scoring. Arizona is 0-5 when three or fewer players score in double figures, compared to 27-3 when four or more reach 10 (including 17-1 with five or more, the only loss being in double OT to FAU in Las Vegas two days before Christmas). Thanks to the quality coming off the bench, the Wildcats have the luxury of one (sometimes two) guys having a bad game and there’s usually someone else to step up.

WH: Finally, a score prediction?

BP: With the ability to play the entire NCAA tourney out west, and with a team full of veterans, anything short of a Final Four appearance is going to be considered a disappointment for this team. Unless Arizona turns it over a ton, Clemson scores off those takeaways, and several guys have bad games all at once, the Wildcats should get back to the Elite Eight for the first time since 2015. Arizona wins 74-68.

This team is good and clutch.

Game 1: Clemson 15 Florida State 5 (7 innings)

The Noles scored early, the Tigers scored often in this run rule shortened game. FSU plated 4 runs in the top of the 4th before Clemson could record an out, but the Comeback Cats didn’t flinch. From that inning on the Tigers outscored the Noles 15-1 en route to a run rule win that ended when Will Taylor singled in the bottom of the 7th to score Jimmy Obertop and put the Tigers up by 10 runs. Clemson starter Ethan Darden moved to 4-0 on the year, going a career long 6.1 innings, giving up 4 earned runs on 7 hits and 4 strikeouts in the dub. This was the Tigers third run rule shortened win of the season.

Game 2: Clemson 9 Florida State 8

Clemson struck first, when Alden Mathes singled to score Cam Cannarella in the first, but then the Tigers’ offense would go dry for the following 7 innings. The Noles, meanwhile, plated 8 runs through out the game, and an 8-1 deficit in the bottom of the 9th looked to be way too big for most teams, but not this Clemson squad. The Tigers clawed back into striking distance, making it 8-4 with the bases loaded for college baseball’s hottest hitter, Blake Wright. And what the Florida native did next, well, I’ll let you watch for yourself and have William Qualkinbush tell you about it.

The Grand Slam tied it up, and at that point, there was no doubt that Clemson was going to find a way to get that last run. A few batters later, Jacob Hinderleider singled to bring home Jimmy Obertop and give Clemson the series win.

When FSU plated five runs in the second inning, it didn’t look great. And when the Noles rolled for another five runs in the top of the 5th, it was hard to imagine that even as resilient as our Tigers are, that they would be able to pull off a second 9 run rally. But, lightning struck twice, although this time it was over a pair of innings. Clemson responded to FSU’s 5 run fifth with a 5 run inning of their own. After the magic that the folks at Doug Kingsmore saw on Saturday, the orange and purple clad folks couldn’t help but believe, as FSU pitching wilted with the the 1998 Vengaboys hit “We Like to Party!”, which has become Clemson’s answer to the infamous Texas A&M “Ball 5” chant, as the soundtrack. After the Tigers scratched across two more runs in the seventh, it was Wright time for Blake Wright to do what he does best.

Clemson has joined Florida State in seeking legal action to escape the Atlantic Coast Conference.

On Tuesday March 19th, Clemson University officially brought legal action against the Atlantic Coast Conference to seek a declaratory judgement. Here’s how to understand a declaratory judgement:

A declaratory judgment is a binding judgment from a court defining the legal relationship between parties and their rights in a matter before the court. When there is uncertainty as to the legal obligations or rights between two parties, a declaratory judgment offers an immediate means to resolve this uncertainty.

Clemson makes three primary arguments.

1) The ACC has publicly stated and filed in their lawsuit against FSU that the Grant of Rights includes rights to games played after a university leaves the ACC. Clemson argues that since the Grant of Rights is only applicable for the conference’s ESPN deal, and their games wouldn’t be a part of such agreement if they left the conference, that the Grant of Rights doesn’t apply if they are no longer a member. Since the ACC’s statements have “chilled” Clemson’s ability to explore joining another conference, they need a judge to give clarity.

2) The exit fee is a unconscionable and unenforceable withdrawal penalty. They should not be required to pay $140.4 million to exit the conference. Commissioner Phillips slipped up and publicly called it a “penalty” instead of damages several years ago. Such a penalty is not enforceable. Since the exit fee is based on a multiple of the conference operating budget, and that budget has nearly triples, so has the penalty — making it far larger than what Clemson approved.

3) They did not break any duties by suing because they don’t owe the ACC fiduciary duties and technically are just seeking judgement anyway.

Additionally, Clemson notes that the ACC “did not hold a vote requesting that its members, including Clemson, approve of the lawsuit against Florida State. Nor has Clemson ever authorized the ACC’s lawsuit against Florida State.” This would seem to be a violation on the by-laws.

The ACC counter-sued the next day to essentially argue that Clemson tricked the ACC into not suing them first. The ACC says the University was preparing the lawsuit while telling them they were trying to engage in productive conversations to avoid legal action. They argue that since the Grant of Rights signatures were collected and finalized in Mecklenburg County (Charlotte), that’s where the court should be tried. Clemson filed in Pickens County, South Carolina.

They also seek to disprove Clemson’s three key points.

In summary, the ACC asks the court to rule that:

- Clemson can't get out of the grant of rights
- Clemson can't challenge the grant of rights
- Clemson can't get out of the exit fee

Largely the same case the ACC is making against FSU (a hearing for that is on Friday) pic.twitter.com/p7o9SOiEtf
— Chris Vannini (@ChrisVannini) March 20, 2024

The ACC even wants damages from Clemson because they say Clemson can’t even challenge the Grant of Rights, in this case seeking clarity. This seems like a weak point which is pre-empted in Clemson’s suit when the University says “Clemson has not breached any legal duty owed to the ACC by filing this lawsuit—which does not challenge the enforceability of the grant of rights but merely seeks a declaratory judgment regarding the scope of rights granted.”

The ACC’s strongest point may be regarding the Grant of Rights applying to schools after they leave the conference. This language seems rather plain in saying “regardless of whether the member institution withdraws from the conference.”

Clemson on Tuesday argued that the grant of rights (through 2036) should not be enforceable on a member if that member leaves the conference.

The first line in this GOR clause that every school signed plainly says it's irrevocable, even if you leave. pic.twitter.com/Q8HawWA93U
— Chris Vannini (@ChrisVannini) March 20, 2024

Clemson makes some interesting points though. Namely that the Grant of Rights is specifically tied to the ESPN deal. They also point out that a school can expelled by a three-fourths vote (excluding the school in question). That means by the ACC’s interpretation they could kick schools out and keep their TV rights.

Regarding the exit fee, the ACC argues that Clemson supported the ACC when the conference got money from Maryland for exiting the conference, but what doesn’t seem to be acknowledged is the fact that the exit fee back then was only $52 million and the ACC only got $31 million of it. Now the ACC is seeking $140.4 million which Clemson says is an excessive penalty far beyond what they envisioned when approving the increase.

Once again, the ACC notes that Clemson took part in and voted for the the increase in the ACC exit fee.

"(T)he Council of Presidents, including Clemson’s then-President, voted to increase the withdrawal payment to 3 times the Conference’s annual operating budget." pic.twitter.com/njRNOuEjts
— Chris Vannini (@ChrisVannini) March 20, 2024

Why Now?

This is purely speculative, but I believe Clemson, a charter member of the ACC truly hoped the ACC could be saved. Perhaps there would be a way to generate more revenue and keep it close enough to retain the tradition of a conference they’ve been in for seven decades. I’m sure they were preparing the lawsuit while working with the ACC to find a way to save the conference. When it became clear there was no saving it, they pulled the trigger.

Two things happened that made it very clear. The ACC added three schools with which there is no traditional or geographic ties to the ACC and in doing so, ended annual games Clemson v. Georgia Tech and Clemson v. NC State games. Clemson voted against this, but it went through anyway. Any nostalgic reasons to save the ACC are gone.

Then, a new agreement with the College Football Playoff was struck and the revenue gap grew by an additional $8 million as the ACC agreed to take less than the Big Ten and SEC. ACC teams will get approximately $13 million while Big Ten and SEC schools get $21 million annually. As stated in Clemson’s lawsuit, this is on top of an already huge media dollar disparity which will start multiplying rapidly as the Big Ten and SEC’s new TV deals begin while the ACC is locked in.

Big Ten: $58.8 million
SEC: $49.9 million
ACC: $37.9 million to $41.3 million.

With the gap getting increasingly wide and the likelihood that conferences will soon directly pay players as employees of some sort, Clemson’s ability to compete at the highest level and the stature of the university at large is at stake. For those reasons, it appears Clemson did the right thing for the long-term well-being of the University.

There is a lot to unpack here.

First off, I will take my L. I called this team, in no short terms, fairly pathetic after getting the doors blown off of them in Washington. I said I would gladly look like a fool if the Tigers made it to the 2nd weekend.

Well, I guess I look pretty foolish.

With that being said, things were looking pretty grim from around the 6:30 mark until about the last minute. The Tigers had built a 15 point lead, with Ian Schieffelin making an incredible acrobatic (lucky) shot. But from the point he missed the FT, RayJ Davis and the Baylor Bears roared back in to the game and got the game to 66-64, and a chance to tie the game from the FT line.

Thank God Scott Drew’s team had an off night from the charity stripe. Two misses from Baylor followed up with RJ Godfrey — a 55% FT shooter — knocking down four clutch free throws and the Tigers were able to escape 72-64.

I’ve given Chase Hunter a lot of flack this season, but son of a gun, he turned it on in the two most critical games this year. Finishing the night with 20 points, and not one but two 20+ point games. According to this CBS Broadcast I have on said this is the first time he’s done that. That doesn’t mean he played perfect, he still made a few mistakes passing and ball handling. Yet, those can be overlooked when he has ratcheted up the rest of his game.

If you had told everyone that PJ Hall would have had two subpar (for his standard) games and one of those Joe Girard would have struggled as well, most people would say that this team would have lost by 15. Instead, everyone is pulling their weight in the clutch. Each of the players have stepped in and done something important during this stretch.

Now for the greater reality, I think everyone can agree now that the season wasn’t “a wash” or “a waste.” The Tigers have punched their ticket to the Sweet 16, so the pressure is officially off. What they do with that will determine just how special season this will be, not if it is a special season.

Oddly enough, I like their chance better than I did in 2018. Kansas was a clear alpha dog, and the Tigers still made it tight in the end. This year, there is not clear alpha. The number one seed is a team Clemson beat in their building, and could have swept had they not been ice cold from 3. If the Tigers can replicate what they were able to do tonight (with less drama), the Tigers could do something really special.

Clemson is 4-1 all-time in Round of 32 NCAA tournament games.

Clemson Tigers (22-11) vs. Baylor Bears (24-10)

When: 6:10pm Eastern
Where: FedEx Forum - Memphis, TN
TV: TNT

The Tigers have had a successful season, reaching the NCAA tournament for the 14th time and advancing to the Round of 32 for the sixth time in school history. Las Vegas favored their first round opponent, the 11-seed New Mexico Lobos, but the Classic Brownell defense of ole showed up and the Tigers held the Lobos to just 56 points in a dominating 21-point win.

Baylor was every bit as dominant in their opening round game. They faced a weaker opponent (Colgate), but did what a great team should and won by 25. Now, they face off with the Tigers in the second round.

Clemson and New Mexico had very contrasting styles leading to a matchup that we predicted would favor Clemson. New Mexico liked to play fast and score with guards on the move. They’re not a good 3-point shooting team and proved it by going 3-23 from deep. Baylor is the opposite. They like to play at a more controlled pace, even slower than Clemson, and are deadly from 3. Their team 39.9% 3P% is the 4th best in the country. This game will look much different.

The Bears boast four different players who have made 30 or more 3-pointers while shooting above a 34% clip. Clemson only has one, Joe Girard III. Baylor has an incredibly deep assortment of offensive weapons. Point guard Ray Dennis averages 6.9 assists and 13.2 points per game. In the backcourt with him are two scoring weapons, 6-foot-5 Ja’Kobe Walter is the leading scorer averaging 14.4 while 6-foot-4 Jayden Nunn shoots an insane 44.9% from 3. The Bears have six players averaging double-digit scoring. Clemson’s scoring is much more concentrated with only three players above 10 points per game.

After researching the Bear’s offense it seems like Clemson has no chance, but KenPom gives Clemson a 40% win probability. Why? The Tigers have the better defense. Baylor ranks 5th in offensive efficiency but only 74th in defensive efficiency. While they defend the 3 fine and rebound well, they’re susceptible inside the arc allowing a 51.9% 2P% (246th nationally). While Clemson is 73rd in blocked shot percentage, Baylor is just 219th. The Tigers must attack.

Baylor starts a 7-foot freshman from Camaroon at center, Yves Missi. He has foul issues like PJ Hall (they both average 4.2 fouls called per 40 mins). Missi averages 11 points and 5.7 rebounds per game. Clemson needs to win this matchup because — barring a Joe Girard III outburst — they’re not going to win a 3-point shooting contest against Baylor.

To win, Clemson must play a different type of game than they did against New Mexico. They’ll need more inside-out action on offense while allowing fewer 3-pointers on defense. They probably can’t survive another cold shooting night from Joe Girard III or more silly fouls from PJ Hall. They need both of them playing up to their capability, and the up-and-down Chase Hunter to play to his high ceiling as he did against New Mexico. If you can get all three going at once, that’s how you beat Baylor and reach Clemson’s fifth-ever Sweet 16.

Clemson advanced to the Round of 32 after dominating the New Mexico Lobos.

The 5th-seeded Clemson Tigers, led by 21 points and 6 assists by Chase Hunter, and 16 points and 12 rebounds from Ian Schieffelin, dispatched the 11th-seeded New Mexico Lobos 77-56 in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.

The Tigers started hot.

The Lobos had no answer for PJ on the outside or Ian Schieffelin on the inside in the first half. In fact, the Clemson frontcourt won the game for the Tigers in the first half. Hall, Schieffelin, Clark, and RJ Godfrey scored 30 of Clemson’s 42 first-half points. Chase Hunter provided scoring punch from the guard position, driving the ball with authority and finding his way to the foul line for 6 points. Joe Girard, despite shooting 2-8 from deep for the game, hit two big first-half 3’s that helped push the lead to 20+ points in the first half.

Clemson paired a smoking hot first-half offense with stifling defense. New Mexico’s top two scorers, Jaelen House and Jamal Mashburn Jr., couldn’t get anything going. Mashburn finished the game shooting 1-11 for 6 points. House went 4-14 for 12 points and only hit 2-8 3-point attempts. Clemson kept scoring as the Lobos chucked brick after brick at the unsuspecting rim.

In a game where the 6th-seeded Tigers were betting underdogs to the 11th-seeded Lobos, the Tigers, Brad Brownell’s underdog Clemson team ended the game in the first half. The run every Clemson fan expected from New Mexico never materialized. When PJ Hall went to the bench with 2 fouls and 4:51 remaining in the first half, the score was Clemson 34 - New Mexico 21. The Tigers took a 42-28 lead into the half. That may have been New Mexico’s best opportunity to get back into the game, but 4 points from RJ Godfrey and Clark and Hunter combining for 4 helped extinguish any New Mexico ideas of a late push.

Just in case Richard Pitino delivered a banger halftime speech, Clemson came out in the second half and scored 9 of the first 11 points of the half, stretching the lead to 51-31 on a Chase Hunter jumper with 17:17 remaining the half. Anytime it looked like New Mexico was finding something, Clemson either came up with a defensive stop or hit a run-breaking shot.

Two Jamal Mashburn Jr. free throws cut the lead to 54-40 with 12:00 remaining, making Clemson fans a little uncomfortable, but Chase Hunter’s personal 5-point scoring run over the next two minutes pushed the lead back to 19, extinguishing any hopes of a comeback for the Mountain West Tournament Champs.

The last 12 minutes of the game were some of the most boring I’ve ever experienced as a Clemson fan. I kept looking at the scoreboard, looking for the comeback, and Clemson kept extending the lead, and that was despite New Mexico dominating the offensive boards only to miss more shots. The Tigers held them to 29% shooting overall and 13% (3-23) from 3, while shooting 44.4% overall and 33% (7-21) from 3.

Brad Brownell even managed to get the walk-ons into the game late. Not too shabby for the underdog Tigers.

After watching the three other 6-seeds go down, Clemson was never stressed in this game. It’s strange because if you told Richard Pitino that Joe Girard and PJ Hall would combine for 21 points on 10-28 shooting, he would have been pretty confident about the outcome going his way. The same goes for the Lobos dominating Clemson on the offensive glass, 18-11.

What they didn’t account for is Chase Hunter playing the game of his Clemson life. After a horrific ACC Tournament game (0-10 shooting), Chase controlled this game, leading the team in both points (21) and assists (6). RJ Godfrey, Jack Clark, and Chauncy Wiggins also provided the Tigers with 17 combined points, and picking up the slack for the struggling Girard.

This was a total team performance.

The win puts the Tigers into the round of 32 on Sunday where they will face the 3-seed Baylor Bears. Baylor dismantled Colgate 92-67 setting up a match-up between two teams coming off solid games with a trip to the Sweet 16 on the line.

Sounds Exciting. I’ll probably watch.
