Clemson hit the road this weekend for its first road test of the young season, and while it wasn’t always pretty, the Tigers came away with an impressive 41-6 win. After jumping out to an early 14-0 lead on their first two series, the offense then went onto punt on 4 of its next 6 possessions, with a FG and a Trevor Lawrence INT mixed in. The defense was dialed in all night however, allowing the offense time to overcome and pull away in the second half.
Three games in and it is still odd to see this team line up with a 3 man front, but it sure is fun to watch. I thought this defense would be faster this season, but it is even faster than I had imagined. This group flies to the ball, and they love to hit. The Tigers harassed Orange QB Tommy Devito all night long, sacking him 8 times. They held Syracuse to under 200 yards of total offense and just 0.4 yards per rush. That is flat out getting it done..... Paws Up
Being that he’s just a sophomore, we haven’t heard his name being called very often. However, Goodrich played very well when he was in the game, taking advantage of his opportunities. He broke up a pass in the end zone with great coverage, and then had a pick on a play in which he exhibited great hustle..... Paws Up
No, Lawrence isn’t back to his postseason form quite yet, and once again missed on some throws. He also had another bad pick. However, he just happened to throw for a career high 395 yards and 3 TDs. He also showed off his wheels again, including this early TD run in which that Trevor Lawrence brashness was on display. For that alone..... Paws Up
A little over five months removed from ACL surgery and this guy is back on the field looking as if he never left. It is a remarkable story any way you slice it. I loved the idea of Diondre Overton playing in the slot until I actually saw it. This team needs Rodgers and it was his 87 yard TD that broke this one open early in the third..... Paws Up
Seems we abandoned the run fairly quickly, choosing to attack down the field. Maybe it was due to Travis Etienne having his bell rung or maybe not. Tony Elliott and Jeff Scott have earned the benefit of the doubt though..... Paws Crossed
Is it just me or do they get worse each season? Picking up the flag on the high hit on Lawrence was absurd..... Paws Down
And from action across the rest of the country.....
The FCS Bulldogs rolled into Bobby Dodd and when it was over they had notched their first ever win against an ACC foe. Now if they can get one more, they will have as many wins against ACC teams as they have against UofSC since the NCAA broke into subdivisions..... Paws Up
How ironic is it that they lose to an FCS team that runs the same type of offense they wanted so badly to ditch..... Paws Down
Kansas was mired in a 48 game road losing streak against P5 teams until Friday nights 48-24 win over BC. After losing at home to FCS foe Coastal Carolina the week before and barely generating any offense, the Jayhawks racked up 567 yards against BC, with 329 of those coming on the ground. It would seem that the cure for a terrible offense is a matchup with one of the not so good ACC defenses..... Paws Down
The Hokies had a close call against Furman in Blacksburg. The Paladins look like they have a pretty good team this season but still should not be giving Va Tech that much trouble, especially in Lane Stadium. Things are starting to get dicey for Justin Fuente..... Paws Down
After starting off 2-0 and laying 63 on Syracuse last week, the Terps cracked the top 25, then went out and laid an egg against Temple. An offense that scored over 100 points in its first two games could only muster 17 points and 340 yards against a stingy Owls defense..... Paws Down
That is all we have this week. Let us know some of your takeaways from the weekend in the comments.
