Clemson Tigers Make College Football Playoffs, To Play Ohio State in the Fiesta Bowl

NCAA Football: ACC Championship-Virginia vs Clemson Jim Dedmon-USA TODAY Sports

After last night’s rout of Virginia we knew the Clemson Tigers would make their fifth consecutive playoff appearance, we just didn’t know the opponent. Today the selection committee announced that the Clemson Tigers will head to as the #3 seed in the College Football Playoff. Their opponent, #2 Ohio State. In the other semifinal Oklahoma is in as the #4 seed where they will play the LSU Tigers in the Peach Bowl. The Fiesta Bowl will kickoff at 8:00pm EST and the Peach Bowl at 4:00pm EST.

Regardless of the match up, Clemson was always going to be playing in the tougher semifinal game. In the Ohio State Buckeyes Clemson will see the best offense and defense they have seen all year.

The big story line for this one is going to be Justin Fields vs. Trevor Lawrence. These two QBs were considered the best QBs in the country coming out of high school in 2018 and both have performed well. But from a Clemson perspective the real question is going to be how the Tigers hold up against an excellent Ohio State defense. With a defensive line that should be able to get pressure to Trevor Lawrence the Tigers are going to have to be smart on offense.

On defense the match up between Isaiah Simmons and Fields is going to be fantastic. Teams have had success against Ohio State by containing Fields after taking away his first read. If Clemson is able to do that Simmons is going to be the man to stop Fields from scrambling.

We’ll have more coverage on this match up in the coming weeks, it will be a fun one.
