Clemson added a lockdown CB today when Fred Davis II signed his Letter of Intent with the Clemson Tigers. The CB from Jacksonville, FL, is a 5-star recruit with a .9844 rating from 247 Sports. Davis already has decent measurements for a college CB, he is 6’0” and weighs 192 lbs. Mike Reed was the primary recruiter for Davis and also got an assist from Jeff Scott because of the Florida connection.
Davis chose Clemson over Alabama, Florida, and Ohio State, and fills a hole in Clemson’s CB depth. With several potential departures and a lot of unproven talent at CB Davis will have an opportunity to play early if he can put everything together on the mental side. Physically he has some work to do on his backpedal and other CB techniques. Davis also brings some elite athleticism to the table with a 4.30 shuttle run and a 36” vertical leap.
QT’s Take:
One of the more underrated of Clemson’s many 5* signees, but actually one of the more important for continued depth and defensive performance. BV needs dominant corner play where he can trust players on an island against spread systems. With AJ Terrell going to the NFL and Kendrick a very strong possibility next year, the cupboard needs to be continually stocked at corner. Coach Reed and (former) Coach Scott dip into Jacksonville, FL and get who they want.
He is only 6’0 but he is very long and rangy. Davis can play press man or drop back in zone schemes. He is competitive and has some fight and confidence in his game. He battles with the ball in the air and doesn’t panic. Doesn’t have the best top end speed, but he is very quick out of his breaks. He will come up in run support, but needs to add more size for the college game (I am surprised that he is 192 pounds, but that just shows he is all muscle, no fat). Florida teams all thought they could get back in this recruitment, but the door never opened. This is another gem in a star studded class.
