Last Week Review

I think we can all agree that the Northeast is garbage and we hate it. The Clemson soccer team headed to the land of chowder and limped back 0-1-1 after a late collapse against Boston College and a power outage against Umass.

After trailing 0-1 at half to Boston College, Clemson scored on a PK (Malik Mbaye) and then picked up another goal from the Danish Destroyer Paul Bunk-Anderson. It looked like Clemson was cruising to another win when B.C.’s Simon Enstrom took over the game, netting 2 goals in the last 20 minutes to win the game for B.C. The defense has been Clemson’s back bone all year, so this was a bit of an aberration, but with a meat grinder of an ACC schedule, this was a bad loss.

Things didn’t get much better when the Tigers faced UMass on Sunday. Clemson had 110 minutes to put the ball in the back of the net and failed to do so, luckily, so did UMass, as the game ended in a scintillating 0-0 tie. Clemson’s forwards and midfielders produced exactly 0 goals on this 2 game road trip. Their production is going to have to improve if the Tigers want to survive in the ACC.

The Tigers have a chance to turn it around against Syracuse at Riggs Field on Friday night. If nothing else, show up and boo Syracuse. You know I would if I had the opportunity.

Women’s Soccer

Last Week Review

The Clemson women had a poor showing against West Virginia. They only lost by a goal, but the Mountaineers dominated the game, taking 15 shots to the Tigers 7. Corner kicks are usually indicative of the flow of the game. West Virginia had 6 and Clemson had 0. The lone bright spot came when a Miranda Westlake header found the back of the net. It looked like the Tigers might squeak out a draw, but The Mountaineers took the lead for good on a poorly defended header in the 79th minute.

Clemson bounced back from their poor performance by trouncing an over-matched Liberty squad. The Tigers are far and away the better squad, but sometimes soccer is a weird game, so it’s nice to see the ladies punish the back of the net against the Flames. Midfielder Kimber Haley provided the opening and closing goals for Clemson to record a brace.

The ACC schedule kicks off Friday at Riggs field against Miami in a Clemson soccer double-header. If you’re in Clemson, and it’s not pouring rain, taking in a night of exciting and cheap entertainment Riggs field should be in order.

Volleyball

The Clemson Volleyball team dropped a mid-week game to Kennesaw State, which I’m assuming isn’t good, but then rebounded for three straight victories to take home the trophy in Big Orange Bash. Freshman outside hitter Solei Thomas was named tournament M.V.P.

Even in Volleyball....we too deep.
