Clemson travels to Charlottesville this weekend for a 3 game set with the Cavaliers. The Tigers have won 5 straight after sweeping Wake last weekend, then beating both Kennesaw St and PC in midweek affairs. Virginia has won 4 of their last 5. They went on the road last weekend and took 2 out of 3 from Louisville.
Overall, it has not been quite the season the Cavs were expecting. After being picked to finish 2nd in the Coastal by the ACC media in the preseason, they have taken a step back. This is a program that has become accustomed to lofty expectations under head coach Brian O Conner, who is now in his 15th season leading the Cavs, however these days they are unranked and sitting at #77 in RPI.
Virginia comes in hitting .271 as a team and the pitching staff has a team ERA of 3.75. One guy to keep an eye on is Andy Weber. He is hitting .359, with 3HR, 37 RBI, along with 16 doubles and 2 triples,
The Tigers come in batting .251 as a team, with a OBP of .374, and are averaging 6.1 runs per game. During their 5 game win streak, Clemson is hitting a sizzling .312. Whatever was said in that team meeting after the Georgia loss seems to be working. Kyle Wylkie has seen his bat really come on of late, and Logan Davidson seems to be getting on track the last few games as well.
This is a series the Tigers can not afford to lose. With no RPI help left on the schedule outside of FSU, Clemson needs to win these kinds of series the rest of the way to ensure themselves of hosting a regional again this year.
