Clemson 5 Charleston Southern 0
Another midweek game, another Clemson victory. Monte Lee is now 32-1 in midweek games since taking over at Clemson, a big improvement over Coach Leggett’s final few seasons in charge.
California kid Holt Jones got the rubber for his first career start and the freshman didn’t disappoint, striking out the first seven batters he faced. Holt had a no-hitter going until the 6th, he then gave up 2 hits, and a walk to load the bases with only one out. Finishing his day with 5 1⁄3 2H 0ER 2BB 8K. Travis Marr came in and continued his good work by striking the next two batters out and keeping Southern off the board. Clark, Gilliam, and Gobin finished the shutout for the Tigers.
If you were sitting in the outfield bleachers Tuesday night, chances are you got real close to a Grayson Byrd home run ball. Byrd, who had one career homer at Doug Kingsmore before Tuesday, decide he’d play pepper with the outfield wall all night. His first was in the second inning, an opposite field shot that somehow stayed fair and barely crossed over the 310 sign in left. His second came in the fourth inning, and landed nicely in the Cajun Café. Then he finished with a moonshot to dead center in the seventh. Did we mention two of those homers came off lefties? Byrd was responsible for all five runs that scored, and just missed a double down the line that would have scored two more in the eighth.
Other notes of interest. Robert Jolley had some back tightness, and sat out this game for precautionary reasons which allowed Matt Cooper to start the game at DH and picked up his first hit as a Tiger. Chris Williams started behind the plate for the second straight game, and will probably get more playing time back there as the ACC schedule begins to pickup.
Next up the Tigers host NC State this weekend at Doug Kingsmore. First Game is Friday at 6:30. Also, for security reasons, there’s a laptop ban on campus this weekend, just until our friends from Raleigh leave.
