Clemson vs Pitt 3rd Quarter Film Review: Tiger Defense Takes Over

New, comments

The Tigers won a record fourth consecutive ACC Championship Game Saturday night

Tee Higgins goes up to grab one against Pitt

With a commanding 28-10 lead coming out of the half, all Clemson had to do was put this one in the hands of the defense. The offense hadn’t been lighting it up in the rainy conditions throughout the first half, but thanks to a couple of long runs from Travis Etienne and a couple of turnovers the defense forced deep in Pitt territory, the Tigers were able to seize control and never look back.

After a 6 yard gain on 1st down, Tre Lamar stopped Kenny Pickett for no gain, then sacked him on 3rd down for a 9 yard loss to force a quick 3 & out

Clemson Ball, Tiger 42, 12:49

Travis Etienne gets a good gain of 5 on 1st down, but a snap infraction negates it. A quick screen to Hunter Renfrow loses 3, and the 3rd down pass from Trevor Lawrence is incomplete.

3 plays, -3 yards, 1:31

Pitt Ball, Panther 31, 11:11

1st down run by Darrin Hall picks up 15. He gets 8 more on the ensuing first down, using a great spin move to get by Austin Bryant.

Hall gets the 2 needed for the 1st down on the next play but that is where the drive would start to stall. Hall loses a yard on 1st, V’Lique Carter is stopped for no gain on 2nd, and Pickett scrambles for 8 on 3rd, setting up a 4th and 3 at the Tiger 37. The 4th down conversion was negated when Pitt was flagged for an illegal shift, which would then force the punt.

6 plays 27 yards, 4:36

Clemson Ball, Tiger 15, 6:31

Lawrence hits Trevion Thompson for 7 on 1st down. After missing Thompson on 2nd down, Lawrence finds Renfrow for the conversion. After an incompletion and a 1 yard run from Etienne, Lawrence would show off his wheels , picking up 16 and the 1st down.

Nothing much doing after that however, as Lawrence was sacked on 1st down for a loss of 6, and after Etienne picked up 7 on 2nd down, Lawrence and Justyn Ross could not connect on 3rd down on a pass that was well defended by Jason Pinnock.

9 plays 28 yards, 4:12

Then after an 8 yard run from Trevor, Lawrence would connect with Justyn Ross on this flea flicker that Lawrence was just able to get off.

That is how the quarter would end, with the Tigers up 28-10 and knocking on the door for another seven as they would be setting up shop at the Pitt 2.
