Clemson vs BC: 4th Quarter Film Review

New, 6 comments
NCAA Football: Clemson at Boston College Brian Fluharty-USA TODAY Sports

For the first time since Syracuse, we bring you a 4th quarter film review. This has less to do with my laziness and more to do with the fact Clemson has been in garbage time by the final frame for over a month (which is convenient for my laziness). Here’s to not needing another 4th quarter review until the College Football Playoff...

Clemson begins the 4th quarter facing a 3rd & 2 near midfield

Down & Distance Formation Play Analysis

3rd & 2 10 shotgun vs 4-3 Quick out to Renfrow vs cover 4 gains 5. The Will couldn't cover the flat in time because who can actually beat Renfrow to the flat? BC didn't disguise its coverage and Lawrence knew the flat would be open when the cover 4 look didn't develop into a different coverage.
1st & 10 11 pistol vs 4-3 Bubble screen to Renfrow gains 6. Renfrow cut inside Rodgers' block rather than get to the edge but he spun through tacklers for extra yards.
Holding, 2nd & 14 11 shotgun (H flex) vs nickel RB flare screen to the boundary vs cover 3 cloud, loss of 5. The boundary corner was in flat coverage (cloud) and released Ross on what was eventually a wide open corner route, jumped the pass to Etienne who never had a chance.
3rd & 19 11 shotgunv (H flex) vs nickel Quick out to Kendrick tipped at the line, incomplete. Anchrum was beaten by an inside move and Lawrence had to get it off with pressure in his face; that pressure got a paw up on the release.

BC ball, 12:57, BC 12, 20-7 Clemson lead

1st & 10 12 shotgun vs 4-3 under Slant wide open against cover 3, thrown behind the receiver and incomplete. Davis was nowhere near his hook zone.
2nd & 5 12 shotgun vs 4-3 under ZR keeper gains 5. Bryant missed a TFL and Wallace/Williams got bulldozed by a backup QB, ouch.
3rd & 5 11 shotgun vs 4-3 Quick out by the slot against cover 3 fire zone, only a gain of 1. The route is uncovered but Terrell flies in from his bail and stuffs the receiver right after the catch,
FURTHER EVIDENCE CLEMSON SHOULD NEVER PUNT, IMO

Well folks we’re in garbage time now but I already started this so I’ll go until BC waves the white flag.

BC ball, 11:33, BC 28, 27-7 Clemson lead

1st & 10 21 I form vs 4-3 under Smash handoff to Dillon STUFFED by Muse for no gain. Holy Muse.
2nd & 10 12 ace vs 4-3 PA drag to the TE is completely bracketed, tipped by Joseph but tipped downfield into a receiver's hands... This is the only way BC managed 100 yards of offense.
1st & 10 12 ace vs 4-3 PA double posts vs cover 2 is open but thrown behind, incomplete. Nobody was open and Huggins had quick pressure, forcing the poor pass.
2nd & 10 12 ace vs 4-3 Power handoff destroyed by Lawrence, loss of 2. Lawrence blew the guard off the ball and never gave Dillon a chance.
3rd & 12 11 shotgun vs 4-3 Fumbled snap, recoverd and run out of bounds for a miraculous no gain. Game effectively over.

Both offenses largely floundered for the remainder of the game, so I leave you with another Dexter Lawrence gif. All shall love him and despair.
