Boy, this escalated quickly.
Yesterday it was reported that Logan Rudolph, a true freshman backup DE, would be applying for a medical redshirt after injuring his shoulder in practice and would be lost for the season.
Justin Foster, also a true freshman, is listed as the next man up at DE. Xavier Thomas and Justin Mascoll can’t come soon enough!
Today, reports are that Greg Huegel injured his leg in practice yesterday. The extent of the injury is not known yet but supposedly “the injury could be worse than originally thought.”
Heugel’s backup is scholarship kicker and redshirt junior Alex Spence, who has appeared sparingly during his time at Clemson. Although Heugel has continued the long Clemson tradition of inexplicably missing extra points and has been somewhat shaky so far this year on field goals, the fact that he apparently easily beat out Spence doesn’t inspire a heck of a lot of confidence in the kicking situation.
At least our punter is good!
Update 7:00pm EST: As feared, Huegel has a torn ACL and is done for the season. Alex Spence will be our new kicker. According to the linked T-net article, he was 4-4 in the spring scrimmage and hit a 51 yarder in the game, so perhaps we’ll be okay.
