Things got off to a rough start when the UNC Greensboro Spartans jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the third in Sunday’s elimination game in the Clemson regional. The Spartan inning was ignited by a dropped fly ball from LF Seth Beer, but Beer responded in the top of the fourth with a big home run. Clemson tacked on another run in the fifth off of a Reed Rohlman sacrifice fly. The Tigers reclaimed the lead in the seventh inning when Logan Davidson crushed a two run homer off of the roof of the batting facility to give Clemson the 4-3 lead. With bases loaded, Reed Rohlman was able to score off of a wild pitch strike 3 to put Clemson up 5-3.
Davidson tacked on another run in the eight with a sacrifice fly that scored Grayson Byrd from third. Starting pitcher Pat Krall went 4.2 innings on 59 pitches, and gave up one earned run (three total) on five hits. Freshman righty Owen Griffith was brought in to relieve him in the fifth and pitched phenomenally. Griffith went 4.1 innings to earn his first career win. Griffith held the Spartans to only one hit during his appearance.
The Tigers now will have a rematch with the Vanderbilt Commodores. The two seed ‘Dores knocked off the Tigers Saturday night 9-4 behind the arm of probable first round draft pick Kyle Wright. Due to the earlier four plus hour weather delay that kept this game from starting until almost 6:00, the game vs Vandy will begin around 10:00 PM. It can be seen on ACC Network Plus via WatchESPN.
