Clemson has secured a second defensive tackle commitment for the class of 2018 with the announcement that Darnell Jefferies has committed. The Covington, GA, prospect is considered a 3 star by everyone except ESPN who has him as a 4 star. Right now most services consider him to be a defensive lineman, but 247 is listing him as a defensive tackle.
Jefferies measures in at 6’3” 275 lbs from his January visit to Georgia. He had an offer from the Bulldogs as well as LSU and Alabama among others. These 3, plus Clemson, seemed to get the most attention from Jefferies and he pulled the trigger after this weekend.
In Jefferies Clemson gets a DL that has experience at both positions. In HS he’s used as both a defensive end and a defensive tackle, though the expectation is that he would remain inside given his size. But Jefferies does seem to have some speed, maybe he could be used situationally outside if needed, but with the scholarship numbers at DE and DT it seems more likely Jefferies will be playing DT at Clemson.
This commitment now puts Clemson at 10 commitments for the class of 2018. This gives the Tigers 1 more “official” scholarship in the class before being full. But it is expected the Tigers will have as many as 6-7 additional scholarships available in the class, and hopefully more.
