NCAA Football: Georgia Tech at Clemson

The third quarter started with Clemson getting the ball and the rain actually moving away for a little bit. It would return with a vengeance in the 4th quarter, but the lack of rain gave ample opportunity to open up the playbook, not that Clemson really needed it.

Clemson receives to start the half looking to put the bumblebees away for good.

1st and 10 at CLEM 13 11 shotgun v. nickel (14:47 - 3rd) Tavien Feaster run for 10 yds to the Clem 23 for a 1ST down Power O with jet motion. Falci's DT slants and gets through; Feaster cuts back into the space vacated by the LB who shifted with the motion.
1st and 10 at CLEM 23 HUNH 11 shotgun v. nickel (14:27 - 3rd) Tavien Feaster run for 9 yds to the Clem 32 Tavien Feaster fumbled, forced by Anree Saint-Amour, recovered by Clem Tyrone Crowder ZR give. Four yard gain becomes nine thanks to Crowder's alertness after the fumble. This would be Feaster's last play of the game.
2nd and 1 at CLEM 32 11 shotgun v. nickel (13:37 - 3rd) Kelly Bryant pass complete to Ray-Ray McCloud for 22 yds to the GTech 46 for a 1ST down Empty set trips boundary and Fuller jet motions. Tunnel screen boundary to Ray-Ray. Renfrow stalks the DB, Hearn and Falci hustle downfield, and Ray-Ray follows his convoy splitting GT defenders. That was probably the best screen of the season. Great patience by Bryant and the OL did a good job of baiting GT's Dline upfield. Nice use of the motion to get the Mike to vacate the playside.
1st and 10 at GT 46 HUNH 11 shotgun v. nickel (13:13 - 3rd) Kelly Bryant pass complete to Deon Cain for 8 yds to the GTech 38 Boundary curl to Cain. CB showed tight coverage but began to bail before the snap.
2nd and 2 at GT 38 11 shotgun v. nickel (12:51 - 3rd) Kelly Bryant pass complete to Amari Rodgers for 3 yds to the GTech 35 for a 1ST down Pop pass to Amari who cuts up and takes the easy first down.
1st and 10 at GT 35 HUNH 11 shotgun v. nickel (12:22 - 3rd) C.J. Fuller run for 4 yds to the GTech 31 Power Sweep gets 4
2nd and 6 at GT 31 HUNH 11 shotgun v. nickel (12:01 - 3rd) C.J. Fuller run for 12 yds to the GTech 19 for a 1ST down IZ and Crowder & Pollard move the LOS 3 yards back and Milan seals. Great blocking by the right side.
1st and 10 at GT 19 HUNH 11 shotgun v. nickel (11:47 - 3rd) Kelly Bryant pass incomplete to Deon Cain RPO and the FS bites on the PA so Bryant sends it to Cain on the fade, but it hits off his fingertips in the end zone. Looked like Cain may have briefly stumbled at the 4 yard line but he could have had it if he laid out a la Mike Williams v. NC St. in '14.
2nd and 10 at GT 19 HUNH 11 shotgun v. nickel (11:40 - 3rd) C.J. Fuller run for no gain to the GTech 19 Power Sweep with the C and playside G pulling. Fuller is brought down by the backside DE. Their DT Branch threw Pollard down and came over to make the tackle.
3rd and 10 at GT 19 HUNH 11 shotgun v. 3-3 nickel (11:04 - 3rd) Kelly Bryant pass complete to Adam Choice for 7 yds to the GTech 12 Bryant wanted Renfrow on the dig at the sticks but GT was in Cover 3 so the FS was there to eliminate that option. Bryant pump fakes to Renfrow then dumps it off to Choice. Smart to take the yardage to make the kick/4th down attempt manageable.
4th and 3 at GT 12 (10:32 - 3rd) Alex Spence 29 yd FG GOOD Dabo hams up the FG celebration. I still want to see Spence kick in a pressure situation (actually, no I don't) before I celebrate.

Clemson moves the ball well including the best screen pass all year. They get 1st and 10 in the red zone and go for the kill shot. It was a great play call and was well set up, but missed it by inches.

Great execution on the tunnel screen to Ray Ray

1st and 10 at GT 28 30 v. 4-3 (10:22 - 3rd) TaQuon Marshall run for a loss of 1 yard to the GTech 27 Counter option and Joseph & Bryant read it from the get-go. Bryant strings Marshall along until he's taken down by backside pursuit.
2nd and 11 at GT 27 30 v. 4-3 (9:41 - 3rd) KirVonte Benson run for 2 yds to the GTech 29 Triple Option. Marshall misreads Ferrell and gives when he should have kept, but I think Ferrell would have probably tackled Marshall too. O'Daniel and Van were there for the QB keep and pitch.
3rd and 9 at GT 29 30 v. 4-3 (9:04 - 3rd) TaQuon Marshall run for 2 yds to the GTech 31 Fake toss and verticals. Marshall wanted the field side fade, but O'Daniel's B-gap blitz left Ferrell unblocked and Marshall doesn't have time to do anything but scramble for a short gain.
4th and 7 at GT 31 (8:34 - 3rd) Pressley Harvin III punt for 53 yds, fair catch by Ray-Ray McCloud at the Clem 16 Georgia Tech's fat punter can kick.
Bryant stays home, recognizes the counter immediately, and strings it out until the gang arrives.

Three plays, three yards. The D is dialed in and focused.

1st and 10 at CLEM 16 11 v. nickel (8:28 - 3rd) Travis Etienne run for 9 yds to the Clem 25 Split flow and Etienne does Etienne things. Tackled by the backside DE.
2nd and 1 at CLEM 25 HUNH 11 v. nickel (8:10 - 3rd) Kelly Bryant run for 5 yds to the Clem 30 for a 1ST down ZR. DE blows up Etienne so Bryant keeps. Cannon with the attempted trap block but he totally whiffs. FS blitz off the edge is right there but somehow Bryant picks his way through for 5.
1st and 10 at CLEM 30 HUNH 11 v. nickel (7:43 - 3rd) Travis Etienne run for a loss of 2 yards to the Clem 28 Power Sweep with Center and playside tackle pulling (last drive it was Center and playside guard). We seem to be tinkering with our pulls on sweeps.Prior to this game we've seen this play with both Gs pulling but I don't recall seeing it with the C and playside T pulling. Cannon Smith is supposed to seal the edge but he gets beat and pulling Falci runs into him. Etienne runs into the mass and gets tackled from behind. Backside DE runs Etienne down for a loss. Like others have noted we're having problems with GT's backside defenders making plays.
2nd and 12 at CLEM 28 HUNH 11 v. nickel (7:15 - 3rd) Kelly Bryant pass complete to Tee Higgins for 10 yds to the Clem 38 Cover 2 with a huge cushion. Bryant gets it to Higgins on the easy curl. Higgins fights for 5 extra yards.
3rd and 2 at CLEM 38 11 v. nickel (7:00 - 3rd) Kelly Bryant pass incomplete to Tee Higgins Bryant sent Etienne in motion and the SS went with him and the LBs showed bullets, so Bryant thinks he has Higgins on the boundary slant M2M. But Bryant throws it 1) too late and 2) behind Higgins, who drops it after getting abslutely annihilated by the OLB who dropped back to the flat post snap. Higgins should have caught it but Bryant didn't do him any favors.
4th and 2 at CLEM 38 (6:48 - 3rd) Will Spiers punt for 41 yds, downed at the GTech 21

With Deshaun and #7 that was a high percentage play. We haven’t been able to replicate it this year.

The defense takes over and they’re feeling it.

Let’s take a moment to look at this swag. Notice how Wilkins and Bryant have some excellent synchronization. Both are squatting to the same level at the same time. Bryant could use a tad bit of work on his balance though at the end.

Pinckney and Register? Well they could use some work. Ferrell’s moving like that guy who thinks the whole thing is a tad silly but since his friends are doing it he’s going to take part. But his heart just isn’t quite in it. Not enough depth on the squat and the hands are just flailing about. But that’ll all be seen in the film room and the DL can work on that.

1st and 10 at GT 21 30 v. 4-3 (6:42 - 3rd) TaQuon Marshall pass incomplete to Ricky Jeune Fade to Jeune who is blanketed by Carter and Smith. No chance. Clearly ole PJ saw the Swag Surfing prior to the snap and realized he may as well just chuck up a prayer.
2nd and 10 at GT 21 30 v. 4-3 (6:37 - 3rd) KirVonte Benson run for no gain to the GTech 21 Triple Option. Marshall read Register correctly and gives the dive but Wilkins knifed in and ate it up.
3rd and 10 at GT 21 30 v. 4-3 (6:01 - 3rd) TaQuon Marshall sacked by Dorian O'Daniel for a loss of 2 yards to the GTech 19 Marshall is gun shy. He had a small window on the deep dig but doesn't have the confidence to try the throw and is brought down by O'Daniel.
4th and 12 at GT 19 (5:02 - 3rd) Pressley Harvin III punt for 34 yds, downed at the Clem 47 Bad punt by the fat punter.
O’Daniel and Lamar get the tackles but Wilkins has been dominant along the DL this quarter.

Three plays, -2 yards on that drive. Mercy.

1st and 10 at CLEM 47 11 v. nickel (4:54 - 3rd) Bryant, Kelly pass incomplete to Cain, Deon, PENALTY CLEMSON pass interference (Cain, Deon) 15 yards to the CLEMSON32, NO PLAY. Jet motion brings the FS down so Bryant goes for the fade to Cain against Cover 1. Cain has everyone beat but the ball is underthrown - 5 yards deeper and it's an easy 6. Cain slows down and one-arm pushes the DB, then gets both hands on the ball, but drops it. Incomplete and OPI on Cain. Now it's first and 25 and the drive is doomed.
1st and 25 at CLEM 32 11 v. nickel (4:41 - 3rd) Kelly Bryant pass complete to Ray-Ray McCloud for 9 yds to the Clem 41 Pop pass to Ray-Ray nicely blocked by Greenlee and Choice. We've done a good job of going to jet screens and motion a lot more this game.
2nd and 16 at CLEM 41 11 v. nickel (4:23 - 3rd) Kelly Bryant pass incomplete to Adam Choice GT shows OLB boundary blitz off the edge. Greenlee signals it to the line but Anchrum and Simpson don't pick it up. Bryant is pressured and has to throw it away; he would have had Renfrow on the dig. Simpson looked like he was blocking to set up a tunnel screen, as he chips the DT then goes to the second level to the area just vacated by the blitzing OLB. He looks up and ponders how he got so alone.
3rd and 16 at CLEM 41 11 v. nickel (4:18 - 3rd) Kelly Bryant pass incomplete to Ray-Ray McCloud GT shows overload blitz on the boundary side. GT's SAM saunters up so far beyond the LOS that it's comical, but gets back before the snap. Anchrum and Simpson are now calling out assignments after failing to do so last play. Out route to Ray-Ray field side is nowhere near complete. Bryant should have thrown the boundary corner to Overton. The boundary CB blitzed leaving Overton covered by the FS with inside leverage.
4th and 16 at CLEM 41 (4:08 - 3rd) Will Spiers punt for 34 yds, downed at the GTech 25

Great field position wasted by Cain’s OPI and the OLine miscommunication. Also, T.D. Roof has aged horribly for a 20 year old.

1st and 10 at GT 25 30 v. 3-4 (4:03 - 3rd) KirVonte Benson run for 5 yds to the GTech 30 GT now lining up an AB out wide with orbit motion. Designed dive gets 5, which is now GT's most successful play of the quarter.
2nd and 5 at GT 30 30 v. 3-4 (3:26 - 3rd) KirVonte Benson run for 2 yds to the GTech 32 GT runs the same play again. Pinckney keeps his pad level lower and doesn't let the RG move him back this time. Joseph attacks the gap and shuts it down.
3rd and 3 at GT 32 30 v. 3-4 (2:44 - 3rd) Clinton Lynch run for a loss of 1 yard to the GTech 31 Designed keep/pitch is shut down by Skalski and Simmons. Skalski scrapes and slows him down. Simmons just ran throught the AB like he wasn't there.
4th and 4 at GT 31 (2:07 - 3rd) Pressley Harvin III punt for 44 yds, fair catch by Hunter Renfrow at the Clem 25 Fat punter doing fat punter things.
Georgia Tech simply cannot block our secondary.

It appeared that Johnson limited Marshall’s reads on that drive. I guess it worked because they got 7 yards, more than double their previous high this quarter.

1st and 10 at CLEM 25 11 v. nickel (2:00 - 3rd) Travis Etienne run for 13 yds to the Clem 38 for a 1ST down Power Sweep with Gs pulling. Nice seal by Amari and Etienne breaks the LB's arm tackle.
1st and 10 at CLEM 38 HUNH 11 v. nickel (1:43 - 3rd) Travis Etienne run for 10 yds to the Clem 48 for a 1ST down Counter to Etienne. Hyatt, Hearn, and Falci created a massive hole that GT's fat punter could have run through.
1st and 10 at CLEM 48 HUNH 11 v. nickel (1:20 - 3rd) TEAM run for a loss of 15 yards to the Clem 33 TEAM fumbled, recovered by Clem Amari comes across on jet motion and the snap is wide and hits him. Bryant recovers it and runs OOB. Bad snap but Bryant also has to get that snapped sooner. Looks like it was set up to be a ZR. Bryant may have hesitated to snap due to GT showing jailbreak.
2nd and 25 at CLEM 33 11 v. nickel (0:52 - 3rd) Kelly Bryant pass incomplete RPO and Bryant thows the curl to Thompson against a 10 yard cushion, but Bryant's pass lacks any zip whatsoever and Thompson gets hit mid catch and drops it. Ugly throw. Maybe the conditions affected it.
3rd and 25 at CLEM 33 11 v. dime (0:45 - 3rd) Kelly Bryant pass incomplete to Diondre Overton Fade route to Overton against Cover 3. Overton has a step. Good throw but Overton can't get his left hand up to try for the catch. He got it caught in the defender's arm. Could have been DPI but it was hard to see real time. Overton had separation and didn't need to start hand fighting because the ball was on point.
4th and 25 at CLEM 33 (0:36 - 3rd) Will Spiers punt for 40 yds , Brad Stewart returns for 4 yds to the GTech 31 Rugby punt caught after the 1st bounce.
Should have been DPI but I can see how it was missed. I’d like to see Overton make more of an effort to make a play on the ball. He had a step and didn’t need to hand check.

They were moving the ball with Etienne before the snap that hit Amari.

1st and 10 at GT 31 30 v. 3-4 (0:31 - 3rd) Matthew Jordan run for 5 yds to the GTech 36 New QB in for GT. Designed QB keep and he navigates through the cut blocks for 5.
2nd and 5 at GT 36 30 v. 3-4 (0:02 - 3rd) Matthew Jordan run for 5 yds to the GTech 41 for a 1ST down Same play; same result.

End of third quarter

GT got its first first down on the last play of the quarter. Marshall was removed on that drive in favor of the backup QB. Afterwards Marshall says that he “settled in” in the second half, but the only thing he settled into this quarter was the turf! sorry

Georgia Tech’s total offense in the third quarter: 11 plays over 4 drives, 17 total yards, 1 first down.

There are no words.

Tonight, Brent Venables heard the lamentation of this man’s woman.

Sure, the offense missed some opportunities, but watching Paul Johnson’s despondence on the Tech sideline more than made up for it.
