The Tigers followed up their series win over South Carolina with a dramatic comeback over another instate opponent. The Winthrop Eagles jumped out to a one run lead in the top of the first inning at Doug Kingsmore Stadium. They then added two more runs in the top of the fifth. The Tigers got one run back in the bottom of the fifth when Chris Okey was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, bringing in Reed Rohlman to score.
Winthrop held the 3-1 lead until the bottom of the ninth, when freshman sensation Seth Beer launched a two run double to right center, scoring Eli White and Chase Pinder. A pair of intentional walks loaded the bases with one out for Robert Jolly, who was pinch hitting for 3rd baseman Adam Renwick. Jolly ripped a single to score pinch runner Jordan Greene and give Clemson the 4-3 victory. After last year's struggle with midweek games, getting the win was huge for Monte Lee's squad.
The win moves Clemson to 9-2 on the season, their best start to open a season since 2010. Maybe Clemson will manage to replicate the success of that season with another trip to Omaha. Perhaps the best part of the early season has been the relatively relaxed demeanor we've seen from Clemson. This year's Clemson squad doesn't seem to be quite as tight as previous versions, and that keeps them in games longer.
Clemson will head up to Winston-Salem, NC this weekend to open ACC play with a three game series against the Wake Forest Demon Deacons. Friday's first pitch will be at 6:00. Saturday's will be at 4:00, and the series will finish off Sunday beginning at 1:00. All three games can be heard online through TigerCast or locally on WCCP FM "The Roar".
