Clemson vs Florida State Film Review: 2nd Quarter

New, 45 comments

A penalty filled, cluster of plays that helped the Tigers keep their lead into the half.

NCAA Football: Clemson at Florida State Melina Vastola-USA TODAY Sports

This week was the “Season on the line game” that we’ve all been looking towards since the pre-season. It usually goes, “if we can beat Florida State, we’ll win the ACC”. Yes, Louisville surprised everyone this year, and we took care of them, but Florida State is a different animal. If they can’t be Championship contenders, they are going to attempt to play spoiler for someone; and they put their best efforts in against Clemson Saturday night.

The first quarter looked like the National Title Finalist Tigers all over again; Watson marches the ball down the field, our defense is stout and cannot be stopped by anyone. Even our special teams looked good. However, the second quarter showed a few weak spots. Clemson’s mental mistakes (penalties) costed them so much field position on defense, as well as costly turnovers mid-drive.

Notice on this play that Watson was baited by White on the split route. White made it seem like he was going to fall to the underneath route run by Thompson, and as soon as Watson saw that, he thew the quick pass to Deon Cain. If you continued to watch the game, Watson said, “he got me” acknowledging that he fell for the bait.

Either way it was great to see the Tigers play Championship caliber football again, and I know we are all looking forward to the coming weeks of improvement from the team. Our offensive line did a better job (not great but better) this week of giving Watson time. I personally think we need to get Wayne Gallman a few more touches, but with that comes a requirement for better blocking.

We have one of if not the most explosive offenses in the country. Our receiving core is deep, our tight end is exceptional, and out QB-RB duo is unmatched. We simply need to see these pieces put together and used properly, and we very well could be looking at a Championship squad.
