Clemson vs Boston College Film Review: 4th Quarter

BC film review concludes with the 4th quarter of a dominant and satisfying victory. There’s very little to nitpick outside of the second quarter, and surprisingly few screw-ups by the reserves here in garbage time.

Shorthand

Alley = area between the OT and WR. BCB = Boundary Cornerback, Bullet = ILB A or B gap blitz. C0, C1, C2, C3, C4 (quarters) or C6 = coverage scheme by the secondary. DIME OF DOOM = 3rd down 3-2-6 havoc formation. FCB = Wide side or field cornerback. Fire = S, NB, LB blitz from the outside. Green Dog = man blitz when your man stays in to block or is not in the formation. IV= inverted veer. IZ = Inside Zone or Zone blocked play inside the tackles.Jailbreak = 7 or more blitz. LOS = Line of Scrimmage. Man = man to man coverage.OZ = outside zone run or zone blocked play off-tackle. PA = Play Action. PBU = Pass broken up. Red Dog (overload) = LB and S/NB blitz on the same side. Robber = S or LB moves to take away crossing routes. C3 Sky = SS moves up two yards, takes flat, CBs and FS take deep thirds. Soft= CBs/NB playing well off the WR until he gets to the 1st down line. Stretch= zone blocked run just inside the last offensive player on that side. Stack = the 3 LBs are stacked directly behind DL. Stalk = WR blocks DB in front of him. Sweep = RB/QB run, often FB/ H-B lead play to the D gap. TO = Triple Option. ZR = Zone read option play.

21 I-form vs 4-3, power handoff, O’Daniel sets the edge, stop made by JD Davis and Yeargin, gain of 2...12 shotgun vs nickel, ZR handoff gains 3...11 shotgun (trips wide) vs nickel man under cover 2, slant wide open on the legal pick play but it’s dropped, PUNT.

2nd team in, 11 shotgun vs nickel, jet sweep pass to Feaster gains 4...11 shotgun vs nickel, ZR handoff to Feaster gains 3...11 shotgun vs nickel man cover 2, rollout RPO, out route complete to Powell, gain of 5...

With the line blocking down to sell the play-action, Smith has to come around and protect Schuessler from the back side end. Since the nose flew right past Falcinelli, Smith was unable to get outside.

12 shotgun vs 4-3, ZR handoff gains 3...12 shotgun vs 4-3, ZR handoff gains nothing thanks to a solid fill and big hit from Lamar...

BC’s left guard whiffed on Lamar while climbing to the second level, who is there to fill and meet the running back emphatically.

3rd & 7, 12 shotgun vs 4-3 cover 3, pocket collapses and it appears Robinson and a host of linemen get a sack, but Ware escapes and almost gets to the edge before O’Daniel wrestles him down for no gain, PUNT.

Bryant in, 11 shotgun vs nickel, ZR handoff to Fuller gains 3...11 shotgun vs 4-3, ZR keeper gains 6...11 shotgun vs 4-3 strong side overload blitz, IZ handoff to Feaster gains 3...

11 shotgun vs nickel (safety enters box) cover 3, ZR handoff to Feaster quickly bounces off-tackle, rounds the corner, and from there it’s Overton’s block vs the corner and Feaster’s speed past the safety which frees him untouched to the endzone, TOUCHDOWN.

Overton does enough on the perimeter and the safety takes a bad angle. It doesn’t take much to free a man with this kind of speed.

BC ball, 3:02, BC 32, 49-10 Clemson lead

12 ace vs 4-3, IZ handoff gains 3...21 I-form vs 4-3 cover 3, lead draw handoff stopped for no gain, Davis twins combine on the tackle...11 shotgun vs 4-3 (Chad Smith Sam, Mullen BCB, Fields FCB) cover 4, QB throws a slant when the receiver sat on a slower-developing in route, Fields breaks and beats the receiver inside to the ball, easy interception and return, TOUCHDOWN.

That’ll do it. Clemson ran the ball on a good front, covered exceptionally well underneath, and brought back the big play. Best performance of the season.
