The real experts here at STS have already, and will continue to, breakdown Clemson's performance against Louisville from Thursday night. I won't add anything revolutionary to that commentary. We're all a little shocked at just how mediocre Watson looked. I guess he was due for an off game, but it was still hard to watch. Not having Mike Williams hurts more than most of my friends are willing to admit and surely exacerbated a rough night passing. The one thing I haven't seen much commentary on was Louisville's two QB diamond set. It seemed to work well every time they threw it at us. Why Petrino didn't go to that well a few more times is a mystery to me. Though there is some truth to the old adage, "A win is a win," this one has raised a number of questions. That being said, having it in the rearview mirror makes for a fun Saturday of watching other games. Here are a few I will be checking in on.
#14 Georgia Tech at #8 Notre Dame
Kickoff at 3:30 EST
TV: NBC
This is a matchup of two teams that before the season started, I assumed would beat us. Georgia Tech, though playing a couple of cupcakes, has only reinforced that fear of mine. Their option attack has been clicking on all cylinders, and though Justin Thomas hasn't thrown much, he has been very efficient. Notre Dame, however, will be their first significant competition. In regards to Notre Dame, they seem much less daunting than they did a few weeks ago. Losing Zaire and Folston are big losses, but their backups haven't looked terrible. The fact that they struggled against UVA, though, makes me wonder if they're not in for a rude awakening this weekend. I'm guessing GT steamrolls them and the slide begins for the Irish. GT 41 - ND 13
#18 Auburn at #13 LSU
Kickoff at 3:30 EST
TV: CBS
Auburn's struggles against Louisville in the opener don't seem so bad now that we had our own difficulties with them, but Jacksonville State? What in the world? Last weekend was the only time in my life that I hoped a team named the Gamecocks would win. LSU has only played one game, a close win over Miss State. Fournette is a beast out of the backfield, and I think LSU is a dangerous team. Auburn's terrible, and I can't wait to see the Jaundiced Tigers knock them out of the top 25. LSU 34 - Aub 17
South Carolina at #7 UGA
Kickoff at 6:00 EST
TV: ESPN
This is what a friend of mine calls a "meteor game," meaning that the best outcome would be for a meteor to hit the stadium so that no one can win. While I understand that UGA is an old rival, there is no hate like the hate I have for USuCk. Spurrier has to be regretting his decision to take over the chickens by now. I know he can't wait to retire, but I hope he will stick around for a couple more years so our wide receiver's coach can embarrass him a few more times before he goes. But, I digress. The Dawgs are overrated. They may have the best running back in the nation, again, but they are not a complete team. Still, they have enough to beat the OBC. UGA 24 - USCjr 17
SMU at #3 TCU
Kickoff at 8:00 EST
TV: FSN
I was glad to see the Chad push Baylor for a half. I'll pop in during commercial breaks to see if his offense can get any traction against the TCU defense. Going into the season, I expected TCU to be a playoff team. Their opening game against Minnesota was less than stellar, but they're on a different plane from SMU at this point. TCU 48 - SMU 24
#15 Ole Miss at #2 Alabama
Kickoff at 9:15 EST
TV: ESPN
This game is really intriguing to me. Like the Oregon, Mich St game last weekend, it features a high octane offense against a big boy defense. Swag Kelly and the Rebels have been lighting up the scoreboard. Of course, they haven't played anyone yet either. Alabama, though, had a strong opening week win against a good Wisconsin team. As usual, they win by pounding away with a dominant offensive line and power running. Their defense is nasty up front as well. Ole Miss may be flashy, but they haven't seen a defense like Bama's. I don't want anyone to get hurt, but I have to admit that I look forward to seeing Swag get taken down a notch or two. Bama 37 - Ole Miss 13
#19 BYU at #10 UCLA
Kickoff at 10:30 EST
TV: FOXS1
How much magic do the Mormons have left? What an incredible first two weeks for BYU. Their hopes for this season took a serious hit when Taysom Hill went down. While backup Tanner Mangum hasn't looked great, he's pulled off a couple of unbelievable comebacks. UCLA was consistently overranked and overhyped by ESPN last year, and they are still ranked highly largely due to that same hype. They've looked solid, but not overly impressive so far. It's hard to believe that BYU can stay close enough for Mangum to pull it out again, though. UCLA 30 - BYU 17
So, with fun games going all day, settle in for the long haul. I recommend slow cooking a pork tenderloin on the grill while enjoying a cold Brother Theolonius. Once you've had your fill, settle in to your recliner with a bottle of Four Roses Small Batch and don't get up. The college football season is short, enjoy every second of it.
