Some unfortunate news out of practice today as Clemson confirmed that freshman Tucker Israel broke his foot during practice. Tucker had been set to compete with fellow freshman Kelly Bryant for the 3rd string role, though given what we saw out of Nick Schuessler last season the winner of this competition could have become the backup QB.
This news is also unfortunate because Israel was considered to be the more ready of the two freshman. We've said that Bryant has a much higher ceiling than Israel, but in terms of the 2015 season it was Israel we may be forced to rely on. Hopefully Bryant spent the summer improving and is truly the better "win now" option over Israel.
The one positive to take from the news is that the break is believed to be similar to that suffered by Gary Peters. The former Clemson cornerback only missed 4 weeks due to the break so it is possible Israel will be ready if needed during the season. That said, his injury makes him the most likely candidate to earn a redshirt for the season.
