After a disappointing 2014 season that almost saw the removal of Jack Leggett as head coach, Clemson starts the 2015 baseball season by hosting West Virginia in a 3 game series this weekend. It is a bit of an unusual program for Clemson to start the season off against. Though the Mountaineers finished slightly above .500 last year, there is a lot of buzz around the program in Morgantown. The school has also begun to invest a lot of money into the program and it would not be surprising to see some success come their way.
Former Tiger Randy Mazey is the WVU head coach. Mazey, who played at Clemson from 1985-1988, reached the NCAA Regionals twice and won two ACC titles at Clemson. He also spent some time as a coach at Clemson for three seasons in the early 90's.
This year WVU has a lack off experience on the pitching staff. The Mountaineers used 13 pitchers last year and only two of them return. They also lost a lot of talent from their lineup, their three best hitters left as well. That certainly bodes well for a Clemson team that may have trouble generating an offense and a pitching staff that could be shaky.
Honestly I have no clue what to expect. I'm hoping we can at least take 2 out of 3 here, but with how the team ended last year it is all up in the air. With likely under pressure for his team to perform this year the team may become a little too high strung. Or at least more high strung than normal
Use this as the gamethread over the weekend and check back later for our review of the series. This weekend all 3 games are on TigerCast or whatever they've decided to call it this year. Make sure to watch on mute.
