Let's hope the Tigers moved on from last week's win quicker than I have. I must confess that I just rewatched the 4th quarter again last night (whoever tigerray is on YouTube, I salute you). It was the ending I deserved, but the one I needed right now. My heart can't take more than one of those games in a season. My weak heart and the fact that my in laws are all Georgia Tech fans has me praying, daily, that we blow the nerds out of the water this weekend.
Georgia Tech vs. #6 Clemson
Kickoff at 3:30pm EST
TV: ABC/ESPN2
Last weekend was a lot of fun, with a few blowout upsets. I actually told my friends that I thought Ole Miss and UGA were likely to get upset, but I didn't have the cajones to call it when I wrote this article. Fortune favors the bold, I guess. Anyhow, here are a few games I'll be checking in on throughout the day Saturday:
#10 Oklahoma vs. Texas (at the Cotton Bowl)
Kickoff at 12:00pm EST
TV: ABC
The historic Red River Rivalry (or Shootout? or Showdown? Whatever.) will be worth checking out for the historic beat-down that Oklahoma should give Texas. I felt like the only man in America that questioned the Charlie Strong hire, but so far I'm feeling vindicated. Sometimes you have to tear something down completely and build it back up from scratch. Maybe that's the game plan in Austin. If so, the deconstruction phase seems to be going well. Meanwhile, Oklahoma keeps outscoring people. I would say that their lack of defense will cost them eventually, but let's be honest, nobody in the Big "12" plays any defense. Heck, Texas doesn't play defense or offense! Oklahoma should roll. OK 45 - Tex 16
#7 LSU vs. USCjr
Kickoff at 2:30pm EST
TV: ESPN
Since my wife will be watching the Clemson game with me, and she hates blood and gore on TV, we won't be switching over to this one often. LSU seems unwilling to really put teams away, so the chickens may hang around longer than expected in this one. But, Fournette. He's been on the top of my Heisman list since the Auburn game and I see no reason to expect less of him against a porous Lamecock defense. LSU 34 - USuCk 20
#13 Northwestern vs. #18 Michigan
Kickoff at 2:30pm EST
TV: Big Ten Network
This is an intriguing matchup. Northwestern's win over Stanford to start the year looks better and better each week. How they held the Cardinal to 6 points, when they're averaging 46ppg against Pac12 competition so far, is beyond me. It's hard to buy Northwestern being good, since it's hard for me to buy any B1G team being that great this year, plus they're the Duke of the B1G, but they just keep winning. Michigan's only loss on the season was a close one to a still-undefeated Utah team. Michigan has only given up two touchdowns in four games since then and has pitched two shutouts in a row. Is Michigan for real? It's hard to know. Is Northwestern for real? It's hard to believe. Will this game give us any clarity, regardless of who wins? It's hard to imagine. Mich 31 - NW 17
#23 California vs. #5 Utah
Kickoff at 10:00pm EST
TV: ESPN
Speaking of the Utes, they've got their hands full this weekend. I've been defending them to friends and here in the comments section partially because I believe they're a pretty good team and partially because I simply want them to be good. I like Salt Lake City. I have friends that went to Utah. And I like the idea of a "mid-major" type program giving established programs the business. They seem well balanced, they have, seemingly, been playing above their talent level, and their coaches are creative. I think Cal will give them a good game, and I think there's a good chance Cal wins, but it's so hard to trust the Golden Bears. They're good for a big upset fairly regularly, but they can't seem to put together a full season of success. They're QB is putting up some big numbers, and though the games have been closer than you'd expect, they've found a way to win. Could this be Cal's big moment of 2015 before collapsing down the stretch? Or is this just another step on Utah's road to the Pac12 championship and CFP? I'm very, very tempted to call the upset, but I'm going with my heart. Utah 34 - Cal 27
To get me through the day, I will be eating deep fried mushrooms and chicken wings cooked in my recently acquired King Kooker deep fryer. Any suggestions on home made wing sauce recipes would be greatly appreciated. I'll be washing them down with Big Sky Brewing's Summer Honey. I wouldn't try to argue that Big Sky is the best brewery in the world, but I like their stuff, and drinking a beer from Montana is the closest I can get to standing in one of those trout streams at the moment. For a night cap, I'll be sipping on Last Feather Rye Whiskey from Journeyman Distillery. I picked this up on my honeymoon in Michigan and have enjoyed it. Again, probably not going to win any awards, but it both tastes good and has a good burn to it.
