Florida State announced tonight that star QB Jameis Winston will sit the entire game against Clemson on Saturday night. The school, who had originally suspended Winston for the first half, made the call after an investigation into the incident revealed new details.
STATEMENT FROM FSU INTERIM PRESIDENT DR. GARNETT S. STOKES AND DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS STAN WILCOX
Based upon the results of our continuing investigation of Tuesday’s incident involving Jameis Winston, we have decided to not play him for the entire game against Clemson on Saturday night. Interim President Garnett S. Stokes Athletic Director Stan Wilcox
It is a rather shocking development from something that seemed fairly innocuous. As several outlets have mentioned the original suspension was thought to have been more for a pattern of behavior rather than for this single incident. The school's announcement seems to indicate that there may be more to the Tuesday incident than was reported on social media.
Again it is also interesting to see the statement come from above coach Jimbo Fisher. Apparently they made the call to suspend Winston the first time as well as increasing his suspension tonight.
On paper this is only good news for Clemson. Though backup QBs have had success against the Tigers in the past, anytime you remove a talent like Winston it only helps. The real question is if Clemson can take advantage of this unique opportunity.
