This morning it seemed that Clemson would be heading down to Orlando to take on an SEC team in the Citrus Bowl. However, that changed over the course of the day.
Due to a reshuffling of the Playoff Rankings and its impact on the New Years Six Bowl Games, Clemson is heading to Orlando but will face off against Oklahoma in the Russell Athletic Bowl on Monday December 29th at 5:30 PM. The two programs met way back on January 1, 1989 in the Citrus Bowl. Clemson won 13-7. Oklahoma holds a 2-1 advantage in the three games between the schools.
After starting the season ranked #4, the Sooners had a disappointing 8-4 season capped off with a wild 38-35 OT loss to Oklahoma State in the Bedlam Game. 3 of Oklahoma's 4 losses were by 3 points or fewer so this team could easily have 10 or 11 wins.
There are many interesting story lines for this game such as Brent Venables going up against his old team, the health of both starting quarterbacks, and the #1 defense in the country going against one of the best rushing attacks in the country.
Clemson has a shot to win three consecutive bowl games. The last time the Tigers did that was 1988 with the aforementioned 13-7 victory over Oklahoma.
