It has been the worst kept secret in college football, and today ESPN ended the speculation with confirmation that College Game Day would be opening the season in Clemson, South Carolina. In a top 10 match up that is unquestionably the biggest game of the opening weekend, the Tigers will take on the Georgia Bulldogs in prime time.
This will mark Clemson's second time hosting College Game Day and time overall. The first came back in 2006 when rival Georgia Tech came to Death Valley for a top 15 match up. While we were subjected to the all purple uniforms, CJ Spiller and James Davis showed why they would be known as Thunder and Lightning for years to come. The last time Clemson played with College Game Day in town they lost to eventual ACC champions Florida State in an exciting if ultimately disappointing game.
This time around the focus will be on senior quarterback Tajh Boyd and junior receiver Sammy Watkins. For Boyd it will be his first and possibly best chance to start the Heisman talk. As for Sammy, a big game will give him an opportunity to put a disappointing sophomore season behind him.
For good or bad, the spotlight is firmly on Clemson this season. A shot at a national title is a distinct possibility, and now Clemson has a chance to prove it belongs in that conversation.
