DB Cortez Davis To Transfer

Streeter Lecka

It was released today that Cortez Davis, who backed up at Cornerback this year, has asked for and been given his release. He intends to transfer immediately and enroll somewhere this summer.

We remarked several times, including our DB position review released this week, that Davis is too stiff in the hips to play Corner and was basically forced to play it this year because of injuries to those ahead of him. In the long run, I think he could've been successful at Free Safety. He would need to bulk up a little more to be successful however.

However, with Travis Blanks likely going back to FS from the nickel spot, Davis would've had to beat him out to play. Its possible that Geohaghan also contributes, or that our glut of tweener S/CBs ends up ahead of Davis no matter where he played in 2013. Tankersley may, for example.

In the long run, this may not be a big loss. However, I don't think we're deep enough in the back 4 to really take the loss of any recruited player in 2013. He wouldn't have become a starter, barring injuries, but may have developed into a contributor.

We'll be looking for Clemson to take another DB to make up for the loss, because we're still under the numbers.
