DB Marty Williams Commits to Clemson

Defensive Back Marty Williams (6'1 200, 4.6) from Fox Creek HS in North Augusta, ended his recruiting today and finally committed to Clemson, after being a heavy lean to us the whole time. He had verbal offers from SC, NC, Florida, Georgia Tech, and Miami among others. It is debatable whether all of those are commitable offers however. He is rated as a 3-star athlete by Rivals/Scout, but plays QB for Fox Creek and will probably play Safety at Clemson. He was recruited by Charlie Harbison.

Williams' rating of 3 stars is fair only in that he doesn't get much opportunity to showcase his coverage skills as the QB at Fox Creek. In that sense he's in a similar situation as Cordrea Tankersley, another future DB who plays QB. So we don't have much to grade besides his athleticism, but we do notice the hip flexibility. Because of that lack of defensive work, he would likely be a RS. Pound for pound, Williams is probably the best athlete in the state with a huge upside though. We feel like he's a 4-star prospect if he played mostly defense. At such a small school he does not get much opportunity to play good competition either.

This is one of the last prospects Clemson was leaving a light on for. We pushed Trae Elston away to keep a spot open for Williams because Harbison likes him better. Clemson is definitely done at DB this cycle. At this point its DTs Josh Brown and Carlos Watkins that we want, and just hold onto everyone else. It does not look like Clemson will push for any others on defense, most notably Nick Dawson.
