Comparing ACC vs SEC Football in Common States

ACC vs SEC

The ACC and SEC share four states: Kentucky, South Carolina, Georgia and Florida. In the SEC East, all of those in-state teams play each other round-robin style every year; in the ACC, some of those match-ups are not annual due to the way the divisions are split up (don't get me started!). I thought it might be interesting compare the match-ups which appear in both conferences to see who has the more compelling games...

Kentucky vs. South Carolina
ACC: Louisville Cardinals vs. Clemson Tigers
SEC: Kentucky Wildcats vs. South Carolina Gamecocks

The Cardinals are expected to challenge Clemson and FSU for the ACC Atlantic division. The Wildcats and Gamecocks are coming off seasons in which neither one was bowl-eligible. HUGE ADVANTAGE ACC.

South Carolina vs. Florida
ACC: Clemson Tigers vs. Florida State Seminoles
SEC: South Carolina Gamecocks vs. Florida Gators

Last season, Clemson was better than South Carolina and Florida State was better than Florida. Isn't that all that needs to be said? ADVANTAGE ACC.

Georgia vs. Florida
ACC: Ga Tech Yellow Jackets vs. Miami Hurricanes
SEC: Georgia Bulldogs vs. Florida Gators

This is the one ACC Florida match-up which doesn't involve Florida State. Ga Tech was not bowl eligible, and Miami was a runner-up last year. The Bulldogs beat the Yellow Jackets head-to-head, and while Florida did not play Miami in 2015, it seems likely that the Gators were better than the Hurricanes. ADVANTAGE SEC.

BOTTOM LINE: In my mind, you could make an argument that the ACC now "owns" Kentucky, South Carolina, and Florida for the purposes of college football.
