A Few Facts About Last Night's Clash Between the Clemson Tigers and the Georgia Bulldogs

We got the game we expected to get, as the Clemson Tigers and the Georgia Bulldogs went down to the wire in a high-scoring barn-burner between two top-ten teams. Here are a few minutiae on the 2013 game’s place in series history:

One team has taken a 31-28 lead on the other three times in series history: Clemson in 1986 and 2013, and Georgia in 2002. All three times, the team taking that 31-28 lead went on to win the game.

For the first time in series history, the losing team scored more than 28 points. From 1897 to 1973, the losing team in the Clemson-Georgia game never scored more than 18 points, but, between 1974 and 2013, the losing team scored 20 or more points six times.

The 38 points scored by Clemson last night were the second-most ever amassed by the Tigers against the Bulldogs. That tally is eclipsed only by the 39 posted by Clemson in the Tigers’ first series victory in 1900, John Heisman’s first season at Fort Hill. Last night’s 38-35 contest was the highest-scoring in series history, as Clemson and Georgia combined for 73 points to eclipse the previous high water mark of 59.

For the first time in series history, Clemson has beaten Georgia in a night game. Prior to last evening, the Bulldogs were 6-0 against the Tigers after dark.

Clemson just snapped a five-game Georgia winning streak in the series, which was the longest such streak since the Bulldogs took eight straight from the Tigers between 1964 and 1973.

Dabo Swinney is now the eighth coach in Clemson history to start out 1-0 against Georgia. Previously, that feat was achieved by John Heisman (1900), Shack Shealy (1904), Eddie Cochems (1905), Bob Williams (1906), Charley Pell (1977), Danny Ford (1979), and Ken Hatfield (1990).

Clemson’s 38-35 win over Georgia last night was the twelfth game in the last 18 series meetings to be decided by a touchdown or less, affirming yet again that one of the sport’s finest rivalries remains alive and well.
