Brent Veneables staying in Clemson

PrintIt appears that current defensive coordinator Brent Veneables of Oklahoma who was in Clemson over the weekend about the Clemson DC opening is staying a bit longer than expecting. Apparently, he has even met and talk with some of the recruits already, and if you listen to the fine folks of TigerNet.com he is looking for houses as we speak. Now that may be a little far fetched but it does seem like he is the #1 guy for Dabo and I am just not sure I like the hire if its made. Veneables defense were ranked in the mid 50's the past two years and every game I can remember watching of OU this year, the defense was horrendous(Texas Tech, Baylor, Oklahoma State and rightfully so, and KS). Is he really going to be the answer to our problems and what does he offer that we didn't have in Steele? Maybe I am wrong and I hope I am but I just don't think this is the best hire we can make especially coming off of what was one of the worst defenses I can remember in Clemson history.

If Oklahoma was so enamored with him
then they wouldn’t give the playcalling duties to Mike Stoops over him.
My thoughts exactly! LIke I have told several people, there was a reason Alabama didn’t want Steele anymore and I believe the same applies to this situation!

Honestly, I feel that Shannon is the better guy for the job. I saw somewhere that when he was Miami’s DC they had top 10 defense year in and year out.

not sure I wouldn’t move one of our existing assistants up such as Coach Cheese or Hobby and go and get a great up and coming linebacker coach. Will the chemistry work w/our current other coaches who have done well @ other places? Was Kirby Smart promoted after Steele left ’Bama or was he on the staff and elevated when Steele came here?
Steele and Smart came on board together in 2007.
Steele was ILB and DC coach, Smart was DB coach and AHC in charge of D. Though it’s Saban’s D, implementing the D and playcalling were left up to Steele. However, Saban is a bit hands-on with the D, and supervises the safeties during individual drills. After 2007, USA wanted Steele as HC, Tennessee and Arkansas and maybe one other school as DC, and an NFL team wanted him, but in what capacity I don ’t know. Saban gave Steele a raise and made him AHC Def and Smart the DC, but in reality Steele called the plays. After Steele left after 2008, Smart took over the D. After James Willis left aft 2009, Saban moved Smart to ILB’s , made Jeremy Pruitt DB coach, but at least during spring practice took over DB’s since we lost so many.
I hope you don’t get Venables. I like Coach Cheese. He did well under DuBose and Saban coaching DB’s and Shula coaching WR’s.
