Around SBN: VIDEO: Austin Rivers' Buzzer Beater Finishes Off UNC

Friday Links, Quips, and Around the Web

Tajh Boyd has been getting positive marks from the staff so far.  Be careful not to jump too quickly to conclusions, so read this P&C article with late-summer intentions in mind.

P&C also discusses Swinney's attempts to reinforce basic fundamentals and strategies this first week of practice.  P&C briefly discusses DeAndre McDaniel being named to the Jim Thorpe watch list.

The State further discusses some concerns that the Tigers have heading into the '10 season

Mason Cloy has made a decision about his future following his time at Clemson.  Cloy has decided to join the military as an officer following his playing days at Death Valley.  Military service and dedication shows a lot about a person's character and leadership.  Hopefully Cloy can utilize some of his leadership skills here with our football team.

Hit the jump for more around the blogosphere and a sweet UGA orientation/marketing/something or another that will, at a minimum, make their PR department think a little more about next year's promo video.

Star-divide

Our fine feathered friends over at Garnet and Black Attack have been pretty busy leading up to the start of fall practice.  This crew has begun outlining keys to success for the Gamecocks in '10 as well as previewing this season's opponents.

If you don't have Tomahawk Nationbookmarked, now would be a great time to put these guys in your Internet reading rotation.  These guys are the authority on Seminole football and evaluate all aspects of the "Nole program.  These folks are giving preseason opponent previews as well as insightful Jimbo Fisher and Christian Ponder predictions as FSU tries to re-establish itself as one of the college game's elite programs.

Dawg Sports has been focusing on both Georgia and the SEC schedule.  They have also been tackling questions about Mark Richt, defending their overall dominance against Florida, and have even been reading our blog.  These guys are all right (even if they are Georgia fans).

The Gobbler Countryboys are looking at the strengths of conference and non-conference opponents (nicely placed through bourbon shots) as the Hokies look to live up to big expectations this season.

From the Rumble Seathas some sort of countdown going on along with a nice graphical illustration of ACC success against members of other conferences.

Bamafan is always ready for football season, and RBR is no exception.  These guys get after it covering the defending champs, so give them a read to see what sacrifices are being made this football season.

Finally, I saw this gem cruising the net (thanks EDSBS).  Niiice:

Easy to see why UGA is the new #1 party school.

I mean, if they submitted “Party in the UGA” for review, the contest was probably a no-brainer after that. :-p

I actually hate UGA worse than the coots.

A fellow Clemson alum took his family (which included some UGA fans) to the last Clemson-UGA game in Athens. They decorated half of the car with Clemson stickers and half of the car with UGA stickers. Well, they were driving through Athens and the fans on the side of the street (who could only see the Clemson half of the suburban) started throwing raw hamburger meat at the car. They had to roll up the windows, the children, who were about 4 or 5 at the time, were terrified, and needless to say his family members who supported UGA did not support them nearly as much after that.

I will say that there is a difference between the people who actually graduated and the south Georgians who never went there who are just fans…dang shame they can’t kick some of their fans out and make them go pull for Florida.

If I ever run into a Clemson fans who did this

Even to a biligerent Coot fan, there would be no holding back. This type of behavior just ruins perceptions of fan bases something I have noticed Clemson is pretty high on. Last year we got someone thrown out of our section for constantly ridiculing an FSU fan and his Clemson wife who had brought their young kids, that shit was not allowed.

Totally agreed.

Clemson games should be a place where you can take your children and not worry about what they are going to hear or see. I think that is the kind of atmosphere we have right now, and I hope it stays that way.

You are fortunate, Clemson fans.

You all don’t have to deal with uga multiple times a year. Worst. Fan. Base. Ever. Don’t let the internet attitude of their intelligent fans sway your opinion. I cannot stand Athens on a gameday and I can’t stand Atlanta when we play the dogs. Everywhere their fan base goes, a rolling pile of garbage follows. They have no respect for themselves or opposing fans.

I'll agree with the UGA fanbase comments.

As a Gamecock fan, I save most of my hatred for you guys. The rivalry has history on its side. But UGA’s fans are the worst, bar none; I’ve had much worse experiences with the ‘Dawg faithful than with Clemson’s fans, most of whom I know are good people. I’ll agree with the comment about the ones that didn’t go to school at UGA; every fan base has its share of annoying redneck fans that never attended college period, much less the prominent school they root for, but Georgia seems to really have a lot of these kinds of characters. Unfortunately, they’re not all like TKK and his crew at Dawg Sports. Alas.

Thanks for the link, BTW.

So every fan who hasn’t attended college is an annoying redneck?

by Skyagusta on Aug 6, 2010 4:35 PM EDT up reply actions

I think he was talking mostly about UGa fans, as the most obnoxious ones seem to have little affiliation with the school. There are fans who never went to a school.
Georgia has a reputation for having a really obnxious and, for lack of better words, “assholish” fan base. Surprisingly, the most obnoxious of the group have never set foot near the campus save for a game or two in the fall.

In short, there are fans who did not go to the school and there are obnoxious fans. I think G&B is referring to the combination of the two when he discusses bad experiences with the Dawgs.

“every fan base has its share of annoying redneck fans that never attended college period, much less the prominent school they root for”

He specified fans who haven’t attended college at all. I don’t see how that has anything to do with the discussion at all, except to suggest that those fans are somehow inferior to the ones who did attend school. I can see how fans who didn’t attend UGA could be different than fans that did attend UGA, but I won’t for a second believe that fans that have attended college period are smarter or more sophisticated than fans that haven’t.

Not everyone has the privilege of going to college. Get off the high horse, GM.

He said “every fan base has its share of annoying redneck fans that never attended college period, much less the prominent school they root for”.
No where in there does it say “all persons who did not attend college are annoying rednecks”. Quit trying to cause a problem by reading too deeply into something and making overdrawn assumptions.

Way to not address anything I said. I think it’s pretty clear that he’s implying that going to college makes you less likely to be an annoying redneck. The way he said it can also be interpreted as “every fan who hasn’t attended college is an annoying redneck”, which is why I asked if that’s what he meant.

Can you tell me how going to college makes you less likely to be an annoying redneck?

by Skyagusta on Aug 7, 2010 2:30 PM EDT up reply actions

Well, if you are smart enough to go to college, and then have the perseverance to stick with it for four years and graduate, then yes, I think you are less likely to be an annoying redneck.

I do not think that all people who do not go to college are annoying rednecks, but I do think if you did not go to college, then you are more likely to be an annoying redneck. Also, I do not think that being a college graduate and an annoying redneck are mutually exclusive, but I do think that if you are a college graduate, then you are less likely to be an annoying redneck.

Sorry for never taking this conversation back up...

I was more talking about the large number of obnoxious UGA fans I’ve observed that don’t have any ties to the University of Georgia or any other college. The observation is often affirmed by the UGA fans that do have those ties to the University, so I don’t think I’m alone here.

I wasn’t so much trying to make any kind of a priori claim about how level of education relates to how much of an annoying redneck you are, but if you want to say that I implied it, that’s probably fair enough. And you’re right that nothing is mutually exclusive here. There are some really smart, successful people that, for whatever reason (financial, personal, etc.), don’t have a college education, and there are some real jackasses out there that do. However, I’d agree with Tigerplowboy that, on average, college graduates are a more accomplished group of people than non-graduates. I don’t think that’s a particularly shocking claim.

Every School has them.

My Uncle and Cousin are Gamecock fans, lord bless them, and are some of the most respectful classy fans I have met. Realistic and honest about the program and the rivalry but still die-hard Carolina fans. My dad and I went to a Clemson Carolina game at Death Valley with them once and all 4 of us were heckled relentlessly by the drunken trash behind us. He was calling them N***** Lovers and giving them directions back to Columbia which were incorrect. Ruined our gameday experience. Clemson has them too and I’d hate to see our reputation ruined by some idiot like him.
