Georgia DL Grady Jarrett Commits to Clemson
Grady Jarrett (6'2 280) of Conyers GA committed to the Tigers today soon after receiving his offer from Dabo. He's rated a 2-star by Rivals and hasn't picked up much more interest in the Spring Evaluation Period, but he is on campus with a ton of guys rated at 4-stars right now, and they are saying he is really holding his own and blowing people up in 1on1s. I think this one is a diamond in the rough player.
Jarrett plays Strongside DE for Rockdale but he will be moved to DT at Clemson. From the film they appear to be a multiple-front but 3-4 based team, so a DE is almost the same as a DT. Now when we get Philip Dukes we are likely done on the D-line. I wouldn't be surprised if Jerome Maybank ended up at OG now either, he has a Guard's body already anyway.
Looking at his film, I'm having a hard time seeing why he was rated at just 2-stars. Perhaps it was his lack of height, and lack of pure speed (5.1 40), but he keeps his pads low, explodes out of his stance, and appears to manhandle whomever is matched across from him. He looks more like a NT than a 3-tech but he'll play both.
Last year he had 101 tackles, 18.5 sacks and over 30 TFL.

Too early to be excited by any of this, but we seem to be doing well on the recruitting trail. Dabo & co. are working the trail hard, and if we can keep bringing in players and keep a winning climate, then TDP will not look like such the bumbling fool he is.

Saw Jarrett @ Tech's camp last week....
for 2 days & think he has a bright future ahead. Thick with good hips & nice leverage. Carries his 280# very well & will play around 300# in college. No idea why we didn’t offer but he’s a nice pick up for you guys. I wish we could have snagged him. Bottom line is at the GT camp he won virtually every 1 vs. 1. Nice get…..

Looks good. I guess TI will be critical because he is a 2 star. They don’t pay attention to who ends up in the NFL. Lots of 2 and 3 stars get there. In fact, the average star rating at combine was about 3.
Okay, "lots of 2 and 3 stars get there" is relative. less than 50% 3star and under.
a little perspective…
The upper third of the draft is still mostly 4-5 star guys.
And, the Upper half of the draft…i.e. the vast majority of major contributors in the NFL are 4 and 5 star atheletes, with some three’s
Besides Stars DO matter concerning potential contribution in College.
I.e. He might be great even at 2 stars… but the odds aren’t good.
Giddy-up!
This logic is flawed
Because it’s about how likely a 3*, 4*, 5* is to make it, not the total number.

nothing he said was incorrect
the average star rating was just above 3 at the combine, that is true
lots of guys are missed-evaluated by Rivals for various reasons, that is also true
The point is not that a VERY low percentage of 2 star guys end up playing minutes in the NFL
Talent, which is what he was getting at, is prettt parallel with rivals star ratings.
Giddy-up!
No i think he's getting at the point
that Rivals ratings are not the end-all of recruiting that everyone makes them out to be, and they frequently miss. Which is perfectly valid.
I will conceed that Rivals is not perfect, but they get it astonishingly close...
Percentage wise – they DO NOT miss that often. 4-3 star atheletes fuel programs, and 4-5 star atheletes fuel elite programs. These points aren’t debatable.
And the odds of a rivals 2 star becoming an all american are not good at all.
So we’ll agree to disagree.

I was in the midst of asking if anyone has a TI subscription so I could figure out what the “major development” was. Thank you for that.

You guys are really cleaning up this year. Dabo must have a nice touch on the recruiting trail.
Garnet and Black Attack: A Blog by and for Gamecocks Fans.
IMO, this is the reason that Dabo got the nod at Clemson. If there was one thing Tom Bowden was known for (other than lack of consistency) it was his ability to pull recruits in that no one thought would come to Clemson. CJ Spiller is a perfect example of this. Long and short, TB always had a closer on his staff and guys who could sell Clemson. Stockstill was that man until he left, Swinney (and Napier) picked up the slack afterwards.

Tony Steward
Steward is now a Clemson lean and that’s great, but it is early and nothing is guaranteed. How likely is it that we land him on signing day, and what factors do you see keeping us from signing him.

To my knowledge he grew up a FSU fan
thats the main hurdle to clear. Models his game after FSU LB Ernie Sims. Parents are probably FSU fans too, I dont know. For the record I don’t see him committing to us.
He has said he will take his officials and wait til NSD. We have a good shot if we get an official.
Camp
Dabo’s camp obviously had a great impact on Steward but do you know if any progress was made with Clowney? I know he is a Rock Hill kid but do you think he is legitimately considering Clemson?

He wont come to Clemson
I’d be totally shocked if he did. Heavy SEC lean and likely out-of-state.
I’d be surprised if the Admissions office let him in either SC or Clemson too.
