Murphy Holloway to Clemson?

(pic courtesy http://www.commercialappeal.com/news/2009/dec/20/rebels-hammer-centenary/)

Murphy Holloway (Ole Miss bio), a 6'7" forward from Irmo has announced that he will be leaving Ole Miss and has been heavily rumored to announce his decision to transfer to Clemson very soon.  Even Kornblut, who is probably in tears at this point, has confirmed such so all indications point to this deal coming through for the Tigers.  The South Carolina native reportedly wants to get closer to home and Mississippi is not likely to release Holloway to another SEC squad.  It is widely rumored that family issues including Holloway's young baby in SC are the motivation for the transfer, as he appears to he happy in Mississippi and has not qualms with the coaches or any situation for the Rebels.

Holloway helped the Rebels in '09-'10 with over 10 PPG and 7.6 RPG.  Holloway played in 65 games and logged over 1500 minutes in his two seasons in Oxford.  In his senior season at Dutch Fork High School, Holloway earned was named South Carolina's Mr. Basketball and the Gatorade 4-A SC State Player of the Year for the season.  Major recruiting services ranked him as one of the Top 70 players in the nation coming out of high school.

Murphy is a player who leaves it all on the court and plays to win the game.  I have yet to hear or read anything negative about this young man and am excited about the possibility of him coming to Clemson.  While we realize that he enjoyed his time at Ole Miss, we are eager to see this big man in orange and hope to hear confirmation about this move to Clemson from Holloway himself soon.  A player of this stature gives Clemson an instant presence inside and MH will surely be an asset to this program.

'09/'10 Highlights:

Fast forward to the 1:40 mark to see some Holloway highlights here:

I think this could be a real impact player

It would at least help us fill one spot inside that we arent getting with Thornton anymore. Ole Miss fans have good things to say about him.

Being both an Ole Miss and Clemson fan

If he had to leave the Rebels what better team to go to than the Tigers! He was the favorite player in regards to most people at RedCupRebellion. He was the only player on the Rebels this year that gave it his all every second he was on the court. He will be a great addition to the Tiger family!

Wasnt a done deal before

As far as I know, he has not yet been granted release and has no official clemson offer, Clemson can do nothing until that release is cleared, then he’s treated as a recruit and NCAA contact rules apply.

Looks like a great fit

for Oliver Purnell’s style of play. Athletic with a big motor. Not many opportunities in those clips to see what he can produce offensively out of the half court. Knowing what little I know about Kennedy’s offense, he may need work to develop any kind of consistent pivot or dropstep. Of course, we have to have a guard that can get the ball into a player on the box first. Coach Brownell has his work cut out for him to get consistency offensively when we aren’t pushing the pace.

In the end, he definitely looks to finish strong by attacking the rim. I think that mind set, dunk instead of dink, is what changed Grant’s game this year. Hope we get him.

(1) Brownell will adapt his system to personnel

(2) In the words of someone who knows more about hoops than I do: “You can find a role for a forward who can score or rebound in any system”

MH denied, this via Ard

Obviously Clemson’s basketball office is very disappointed in today’s turn of events. That disappointment also runs beyond that, due to the way this initially played out in the media. And that’s why I want to reiterate something Larry and I mentioned earlier. There is no doubt that this could have been wrapped up last week had reports not surfaced on Holloway-to-Clemson. Ole Miss officials were none too pleased with it and reacted to it immediately. Essentially the reports put both Clemson and Holloway in a very difficult position and in the eyes of Ole Miss officials, the situation was the appearance of impropriety when in reality there was none, because Clemson did not initiate contact with him, nor did it tender an offer to him (directly or indirectly), nor did it send any correspondence or mail to him.

  • The book is not totally closed on this situation. We are still tracking it. The reason why is because I can tell you Clemson remains interested in Holloway, but again, because his appeal was denied and he was not released to Clemson, its coaches cannot initiate contact to him. However, the door is open for Holloway obviously to contact Clemson and if he chose to come to Clemson, he would have to pay his way for a year, and then Clemson would have the leeway/greenlight to scholarship him thereafter.

I’m told by a source familiar with the situation that Clemson’s coaches will now internally explore options here (talk with compliance/look at financial aid packages/grants, etc) and again, the door will be open for Holloway should he choose to give Clemson a look as his new college destination.
