For all of you ACC haters out there
Was this a "down" year for the Conference?.. Yep. Does UNC falling on its face hurt the national perception of the conference ? yep. But.. anyone who thinks this conference can't compete in the big dance.. hasn't been paying attention. here's a look at the top 5 teams in each of the big conferences.. and how they fared vs the RPI top 50 this year.. and those are the teams that will be playing in the Big dance
Record vs top 50 Likely sweet 16 teams
Big 12 : 33-24 4
Big East : 30-20 4
ACC: 29-27 2
Big 10: 23-22 2
Atlantic 10: 17-21 1
SEC: 16-20 2
Pac 10: 7-20 0
Non Power conferences 1
For having SUCH a terrible year.. the ACC top 5 has 1 less win than the mighty Big East has vs the top 50. Now.. i agree that the big east will likely get 8 teams in the dance.. and they will receive a lot better overall seeding than the ACC will.. but the sky is not falling if you are an ACC fan.
These opinions are not necessarily those of the Proprietors of Shakin' The Southland.

I'm a huge ACC fan
I root for every team in this conference against anyone from out of conference. I’m just calling it how I see it this year.
The top 5 in the ACC just aren’t as good as the the top 5 from the Big 10, Big East, or Big 12 this year.
You said it was “likely” that 3 teams from the ACC would make the Sweet 16. I think it is very UNLIKELY. I think Duke will make the Sweet 16, possibly Maryland (depends on 2nd round matchup), and the other 4 teams will not make the Sweet 16. Here is ESPN’s current predicted matchups. Please tell me which of these teams you think is likely to get to the Sweet 16:
10 Clemson vs 7 Texas winner to play Ohio State.
9 FSU vs. 8 UTEP winner to play Syracuse.
10 VT vs 7 Richmond winner to play West Virginia.
10 Wake Forest vs. Missouri winner to play Purdue.
Im pretty sure i said 2 in the posting above...
But 3 is very possible.
This is a year.. more than any other that i can remember.. where teams at the top are not nearly as strong.. UNC was dominant a year ago.. the best teams in the country this year dont comapre with that tarheel team.
Hm.. just looking at matchups above..
Hm.. just looking at matchups above..UNC beat Ohio state with Evan Turner early this year.. athetically.. could texas or clemson beat them.. yes.

Butler and Ebanks are amazing.. but this same WV team lost in the 1st round a year ago as a 6 seed to #11 Dayton

I'm referring to your comments last night
You said the ACC was likely to get 3 teams to the Sweet 16.
You also said that you thought they would go 5-2 in the 1st round. Now you are changing that to “could go 2-5 and it depends on the matchups”.
I stick by my comment last night that the ACC will be embarrassed when CBS shows conference records in the tournament. The ACC is going to have a lot of middle seeds, which makes it a lot less likely that the teams will go far.
I stand by what i said...
If you look at the 7 Acc teams that will be in the dance (yes.. 7.. assuming Ga tech beats UNC in the 1st round on thursday)… they’re in.. if you get ESPN.. they are SO far in.. they aren’t even in the last 4 in…
Duke – playing great heading into march.. the 3 Ss… as much as i hate them.. are good
Maryland – playing its best ball of the season.. at the right time. If they make it to Sunday’s championship game vs Duke… probably a 3-4 seed.
FSU – probably a 7-8 seed.. and with their size.. they are a tough matchup.. if you’ve never seen them before.. trying to get ready in 4 days.. isn’t easy.
Va tech – When you have Delaney.. and his ability to draw 50 fouls a game… you have a chance
Wake, Ga tech, and Clemson - ah.. the perennial under achievers.. talent.. yep.. ability to just look god awful.. yep.. but tons and tons of talent.. and at some point.. doesn’t the light have to come on ?
5-2 or 4-3 in the first round…. very possible.. we shall see if i’m as smart as i think i am.. a week from tomorrow.
If thats ESPNs latest bracketology
I see us losing to Texas, FSU wins, Wake I think can win, Richmond i’d have to do some research on.
FSU wont beat Syracuse, no way in hell.
VT/Rich wont beat WVU unless Huggins gets too liquored up.
Wake I think would give Purdue a good game, but I see no reason to pick them to win.

Obviously it is easy to say that anyone can win on a given night
But if we were to realistically assess these matchups….
Texas will be favored to beat Clemson and should beat Clemson.
I will pick FSU over UTEP…but FSU will get worked over by Syracuse and their zone.
I have seen Richmond play and really like the way they play. I think it’s a 50/50 game though cause I do think Greenberg is a good coach.
I believe Missouri would handle Wake.
Normally I'd be pushing ACC squads further in the tournament,
but this year, i won’t go that far. The guard play isnt there this year.
Right now I’d only put one as far as Sweet 16, and the rest depending on the matchup.
Sedge, it's not looking good for the ACC right now.
My 1 ACC team in the Sweet 16 is looking a lot more likely than your 3 prediction.
