Clemson takes DE Tavaris Barnes away from FSU

I said I wasnt expecting any commitments this weekend, given that most of the visitors were already committed to Clemson or other places, but given FSU commitment Tavaris Barnes' comments, it seemed like the door was more open for him than anyone else.

ESPN vitals and a little film

Today the 4-star 27th national DE (Rivals, 3-star Scout) from Jacksonville FL changed his commitment to the Tigers, and has cancelled his visits to UNC and FSU later in the month.

"I just committed a few minutes ago, I told coach Swinney and he was fired up. He was pumped up. We hugged and told one another that we love each other. I liked this place from the very start when I got here."

"I just love everything about Clemson," he said. "I love coach Swinney. I love my recruiter, coach Scott and I love my position coach, coach Rumph. I fell in love with the place. My mom loves the coaches here, too."

"I'm sticking with Clemson and I'm done with any other visits, I'm done with my recruitment. It just feels right here. I know I'll be taken care of here and this feels like it's right. Clemson is where I got to be and want to be. I need to be here. They have an amazing stadium, a great field and I have a great experience here."

More insight can be found from his commitment to FSU article posted at Tomahawk Nation.

Barnes stands 6' 4.5" and weighs in at 250-260 lbs (depending on who you ask).  He ran a 4.70 40 yard dash at the Jacksonville Camp in January.  Barnes also registered a 4.31 Shuttle run and a 7.53 three cone drill (impressive numbers for a man his size).  He really wowed the scouts with his athleticism at the camp with a 32" vertical leap

....

Barnes also looked unstoppable during the one-on-one drills, using a variety of moves to blow past offensive linemen. He displayed advanced use of his hands, good footwork and strength. More good news about Barnes: He has a frame to get bigger than he already is, which should give him some versatility at the college level.  Source:

ESPN

.....Our resident football coach Oline01075 had this to say after watching Barnes  "He plays high as S***, and gets no extension with his arms.  Squeezes well when play is away or against a down block.  Jesus, he has an elite 1st step.  Wow.  When he plays low he really flashes."

apologies for my sour grapes

this kid did the chop with me at the landing on new years eve. I believe he works at Taco Bell. He’s raw, but if you can stay on him and gt him to work hard every day, he can be a very good strongside end, and it’s good that you don’t need him to contribute immediately.

That's not sour grapes, lol, that's the drama of recruiting

Nothing is set in stone until they sign the LOI and get on your campus. I read your site often, and I’ve seen the discussions you guys have over the defensive line. I had the privilege of sitting through a couple of beat downs when I lived in Tally for a while (gracious season ticket holders and good people). Sour grapes is when you ask Peter Boulware why did he leave the state when you already know what his answer would be. Too bad he added he was a South Carolina fan growing up (talk about a slap in the face), and he was cool about it. Couldn’t hate on him at all. Hopefully there will be recruiting battles like this in the future and both teams are top 15 or better outfits for years to come. Good luck to you guys….

Allegedly he’s acknowledged that knock on him—lack of worth ethic—and has remedied it in his senior year or some shit. Have you seen his SR film to verify?

That is a big pickup, we all knew he was pretty open to everyone coming into the weekend and it’s good to snatch away a quality end from the Noles.

Great if he signs. I like his size and measurables...

Getting him and Crawford away from FSU and UGA is one small victory against the main team we will have to get by in the Atlantic, and one of six for the top spot in the ACC (VaTech, FSU, Mami, GaTech, UNC and yes BC) in the ACC. Now that Fisher is in complete control it will be important to win some of the recruiting battles, because at some point in the near future his defense will catch up to his offense. That is a scary proposition.

They definitely will

nobody can stay THAT bad on defense. What we’d need to hope for is that the offense takes a step towards inconsistency with Jimbo not coaching it directly every day.

Well to make a long story short Barnes had an unbelievable off-season where he was named the top DT at the Under Armour camp, which had top prospects like Todd Chandler, Louis Nix, and so on. From that point Barnes was just a different player. He got stronger and just honestly started trusting his skills as a pass rusher and a player. I don’t have his exact stats on me but I can tell you he had over 8 sacks this season and that turnaround in mentality is why his stock went up this year and obviously I couldn’t be more proud of him.

Now as far as what kind of player Clemson is getting I will tell you this. He’s probably the quickest DE I’ve seen in getting off the blocks and explodes off the line of scrimmage. Barnes uses his hands very well and sheds blocks very well. His tackling at times is a little reckless because of how explosive he is off the initial snap but I think the current ranking is pretty fair for him by Rivals. Barnes will need to add some weight for college but when you have speed like he does off the end and the strength he provides that won’t be much of an adjustment for him. Tavaris best move IMO is the swim move because of how quickly he can get around the edge. His bull rush move is good but the best quality as I mentioned with him has always been his quick feet.
